you shouldnt really need to format because your sound card id sort your cd rom out first before. Thats a strange reason to format. Maybe you have the wrong drivers? or you can download drivers for a sound card

Drivers are up to date.
Have run Registry Mechanic and errors have been fixed.
Hard drive is okay.
Am using a Souundblaster live card with a Matrox RT20000 video capture card.
Sound works everywhere else on PC.
Still can't get CD ROM to work. It just will not recognise any disc. I am wonderering whether this is key as the audio connects through the sound card and then to the Matrox card.
Something has screwed up with the CD and I'm not convinced that it's broke. It is recognised in the system and is allocated a drive letter but when it comes to behaving, it's having some time off!
That's why I think a reformat and reinstall may be the best thing to do.
Everything else on the PC is fine.
Anyone know how much sledgehammers are??

try booting from a windows 98 boot floppy. load the cdrom drivers and then see if you can read a cd. this should tell you if the cdrom is ok.
