cannot see inserts

My friend is having 2 problems, can you help please
1)he cannot read any images inserted in incoming e-mails, only the red X is there in square.
2) When he sends me e-mails, an attachment icon shows but he has not sent an attachment.

My first guess would be that he has a firewall set to stop attachments.
To really diagnose the problem, more information will be needed.
What OS is he using?
What email client is he using?
Is this a web based email or POP3 email?
Does he have a firewall?
