Need a little more info. What O/S are you running? XP on both or XP and Win2000? the IP for your router should be 198.168.1.1 with a subnet mask of 255.255.255.0

DHCP should be the way to go for setting the laptop and desktop. but if you are setting fixed IP's, what are they set at, for each machine?

i ran the setup on both computers. on the laptop(with the wireless card) if i change the tcp/ip setting to obtain an ip address automatically, it says limited or no cennectivity to network, but if i manually put in values, it connects, but for the status, it shows 0 packets being recieved, but the sent packets keep increasing

The reason i asked what kind of router you have is because the default IP of the router itself does sometimes vary, your router manual should tell you the default IP for your particular router. Something else you need to know is if your router is running as a DHCP server or an access point, normally its DHCP by default which would mean your machines should be set to automaticly pull an IP from the router. You can also try to give the machines an IP, then set the routers ip as the default gateway address, that should give you internet access (in a perfect world). Just thoughts you can look into

I think the only thing left seems to be a firewall issue. Turn off all firewalls and see if you can log on.

Here is a link if your not sure how to do it.

Hope this helps

Give this a shot, it might straighten out a glitch or two(for the laptop).

Right click on Internet Explorer---> select Properties---> Connections--->Setup (at the top)

Run the Wizard choose "Connect to the internet " --.next--"Setup connection manually" next --"Select connect using broadband that is always on."

I've worked on 2 systems lately that Cox couldnt' configure for internet and it was a virus problem. Check yours out for that.

Also, you might want to check the power saving features on your laptop, it might be shutting everything down due to inactivity.

i decided to go out and buy a router and pc card of the same brand. i bought a dlink airplus extreme g router and pc card. i have the cable modem connected to the wireless router, and the desktop connected to the router thru an ethernet cable. the desktop can go online with no problem. i installed the wireless pc card to my laptop. when i have the setting aquired automatically, the connection is "limited or no connectivity" and when i manuall enter the setting for the card, it says it has an excellent connection but will not connect to the internet. ive tried almost everything i could think of. also i tried connecting the laptop hardwired to the router to go online, and it still said limited or no connectivity. can someone please help me get my laptop online.

THANK YOU! :)
