DSL Not connecting at 100mbs

Postby knightsgoalie20 » Fri Jan 28, 2005 12:45 am

Not sure if this should be listed under software, hardware, or Windows XP. My DSL connection is no longer connecting at 100mbs. It now only connects at 10mbs. If I right click on my Local Area Connection, go to properties and select configure (3Com Gigabit LOM NIC), select Advanced then media type and change the value from Auto to 100Mb Full Duplex (or whatever I decide) I lose my network connection. Windows tells me the network cable is unplugged. If I change the value back to Auto then reconnect my DSL is connected at 100Mbs again until I disconnect.

I do not have a DSL modem since there is fiber cable coming into the house (don't know the term for this type of connection.) My PC plugs into the wall via a standard CAT5 cable. I have already contacted my ISP and they were less than helpful. They just confirmed what I already know and that is my connection is at 10Mbs.

Any help would be appreciated..... THANKS!

When you change your nic settings, you normally have to reboot to get it working. There is another way, after you reconfigure, right click on the network connection and disable it, (it takes about 5 seconds) then click on it again and enable it. It saves having to reboot.

even if you don't change the settings, try disable and then enable to see if that gets it running.

I'm running a modem, one wireless nic and a regular nic and I notice that in XP I can't reset a nic with the modem on--I can't quite figure that out?? :|

I tried to disable the NIC, change the settings, then enable. It will connect at 100Mbs again, but once I disconnect then reconnnect it is back to 10Mbs. I will try to reboot next and see if that helps. Thanks....
