You shouldnt be slow at all.Im running the same cpu you are.Is this something new or has it always ran this way?If new,how long has it been lagging.Did you install anything new around the time you noticed it,do you defrag often, checked for any virus's?You can restore xp without losing your installed software if you back it up to a point after the software was installed. If you have a virus i dont think restore will do much good.<-----Great place for a free online scan.Try pressing control>alt>delete and check your process's.It will tell you what is sucking up all your cpu power.

Have you updated your Windows? This was a known issue with WinXP SP1.
They have since issued a patch for the problem.

I it has not always been this way........I have installed quite a few programs since I got the computer but haven't noticed anything right after installing any of them. I thought the memory was bad and replaced that. I have updated windows....as a matter of fact, I have broadband internet access and it updates automatically. I have also checked all the processes and CPU and Memory loads and nothing seems out of the ordinary. This is why I think something in the Operating System might be corrupt. Thanks for the advice and any more would be greatly appreciated.

Ok, if you're sure it's updated. IMO...Letting your computer download anything without your knowledge or approval is a bad practice.
What's running in the background? Have a look at your CPU usage. Ctrl/Alt/Del Processes Tab. Is there a program hogging your CPU usage?
Do you have too much running at startup? Start / Run / Type MSCONFIG click Enter / Startup Tab. Disable all you don't need. For info on each go to
Have you done your routine maintenance? i.e. Deleting Temp/Temporary Internet files/History files/etc.
Followed the above with a Chkdsk and Defrag?
The is a very good resource for registry modifications that improve WinXp speed. The site is very educational about all the processes running in WinXp and what can/cannot be shutdown. They also have patches available. Worth a check.
To answer your question about reinstalling WinXp...You can install it over but you will lose all your Windows updates.
