Sharing folders on 2003/XP workgroup

Postby NXRosco » Mon Nov 29, 2004 1:24 pm

I have set up my 2 win2k3 servers and 2 XP workstations on the same workgroup.
One of the servers is a DHCP server and a file server.
Whenever I try to access these shared folders (Read only access for everyone), I get asked for a password, as if I was trying to connect to an admin share.
What do I need to do to sort this out???
All PCs are on the same workgroup, all on the same subnet, I can ping all machines, I can even browse to the server from my network places, but it tells me I don't have permissions for the folders.

Believe it or not, it is working the way it should. To stop being prompted for a user and pass, you need to synch up all users and passwords on all machines. This is a manual process.

Example:

PC1 has a username of BigFred with a password of Homer. Fileserver1 needs to have a username of BigFred with a password of Homer on it as well. Then when BigFred logs into PC1 and tries to access a share on Fileserver1 he wont get prompted for a username and password.

Hope I explained that well. :)

Is there no way to turn off this need for authentication???

You could try turning on the Guest account for both the Fileserver and the PC.
