Drive has become corrupt......but how?

Postby skeletor » Tue Nov 23, 2004 3:55 pm

Ok this one has me stumped a bit.... I have a 160gb maxtor hd and I have it split into 3 partitions c, d, e. Now everything has been working fine for a while now aprox. 8 months... The other day I am burning some movies that are on the e drive and I get a cycle redundacy error, so I figured ok there is something wrong with the file(btw I own the dvd's and I copied them to my hard drive). Then I go ahead and try another one same thing....hmmm So I go to click on my e drive to delete the file but after I click on it, it then takes a while to do anything then pops up and asks me if I want to format my drive........?????????????? I go to computer management and look at the disk management portion and it doesnt know what format the drive is...but says its healthy and can tell me how big it is but not how much free space is left.... I try to do a restore but it says it cant make any changes to drive e cause it is offline..... So I ended up formatting my e drive but I am boggled to why this happened.... The only thing that I can think of is that there was a file on my computer called EXPINFO.EXE that was in the windows directory... I had to go in through safe mode to delete it cause every other time it wouldnt let me delete it and when I tried to stop the process it woudl just start over again and I also couldnt get it out of the registry either but I managed to get it out by going into safe mode. This happened 3 days prior to my drive acting up.... PLEASE ANYONE ANY SUGGESTIONS....

It might have been a corrupted MBR but that cycle redundacy error would worry me.

Have you checked the "health" of this drive since the format?

Yes I have and it is healthy...it was healthy before to.. The cycle redundacy error came from the dvd program when I was burning a dvd and that is because there was a problem with the e drive. It just worries me that how could my drive become corrupt like that.... and I can not find any info on this expinfo.exe Everything is working fine now but I am just worried that one of my other drives will do the same thing....

I cant find any info on EXPINFO.EXE. But I dont think its a big deal. If it was, it would be all over the net.

I wonder if you had rebooted when the error came if it would have cleared.

Only think I can suggest is to keep an eye on it.

Well I almost agree with you but I think this file was a big deal since it refused to be deleted.... but anyhow I did several reboots, I checked in the bios, and I played around in windows to try and figure this out but I never did... everything is working fine for now but I am still wondering if this is going to happen to me again...well thanks for the replies...
