I'm about to throw this thing out the window!!

So, a few weeks ago I was posting on here about a problem I was having with my computer. I had tried to overclock (first time) and honestly had no idea what I was doing. After doing that my system was crashing, programs and games wouldn't run anymore...just a mess. I tried many suggestions from here and nothing worked. I was told most likely I messed up my registry in the process.

So I decided to go out and buy a new hard drive (80 gig) and just freshly re-install Windows XP, do the upgrads, SP2...etc. I'm having the same issues! There's nothing else differant except a new hard drive, I removed the others and Windows still crashes. The only change in CMOS that I made was going from a FSB of 100 to 133 so my XP2400 will run at it's intended speed. Anything else that I should do when I change the FSB? Could I have wrecked my memory? I've heard about memtest86 and dowloaded it but how to use it seems a bit confusing to me.

Anyway, any suggestions?

Thanks!

Specs:
AMD Xp2400
Soyo Dragon Ultra Platinum
512 mb PC2700 ram
6 case fans
Windows XP Pro

Here's an update already. When I pusehd the SUBMIT button I got an error that Windows had to close. Here's what the error was:

C:\docume~1\ara\locals~1\temp\157b_appcompat.txt

I get that or something similar alot.

Hi arastar Image

Have you tried to set the FSB back to 100 to see if it may stable it?

Hi and thanks!

I did switch back to FSB100 when I was having the initial trouble but not since I installed the new hard drive and fresh XP installation. It is supported by my MB. I'd think it shouldn't be an issue.

I'm not an expert in overclocking but I believe when you overclock, although you didn't state what you overclocked Im assuming the motherboard, changing your hard drive will not fix the problem. It lies within the board.

I tried to push the Processor a bit when I overclocked. I did fail to increase voltage where needed and decided to just leave it alone and give up on overclocking for now. I just wanted my system to work again. ;)

So you think I might have fried the board? I did remove the battery to reset the CMOS at which point I only put the FSB up to 133.

Is there a way to test the board or is my best bet to just head out and buy a new one?

I was always told if you screw up when you overclock look to replace it but wait for some other replies, theres some good mods in here who have more experience in overclocking than I

I'm only a newbie in that area
Good luck :)

I'm not sure what changes you made but if you can get into the BIOS...RESET everything to the DEFAULT values then reboot.
