XP Home-current security setting prohibit running ActiveX

Postby CanadianTek » Sun Oct 24, 2004 6:08 am

Hey Folks,

curious if you can help, ..

Xp Home on a Dell Dimension 4600 Tower with only SP1 installed
(they reformatted.. fresh, as their last attempt to install SP2.. buggered everything up - freezing/lock ups.. etc.. )

They are running IE6

6.0.2800.1106.xpsp1.020828-1920
cypher strength 128 bit

when we go to a known trusted site,
for example,

www.bellagio.com and go to the enhanced side,

then select reservations

we get a windows error dialog box stating

"Your current security settings prohibit running ActiveX controls on this page. As a result the page may not display correctly."

...we have an xp pro system with IE6 sp2 running.. and tried to duplicate the
LOCAL INTRANET Settings.. under the security tab..., to be identical but still to no avail

(also noticed that the HOME, security, Internet.. has the Custom Level button Greyed out, unlike its sister product, xp pro.. with ie6 and sp2.. ??)

anyway..

did a google search.. and found this suggestion..

For the first five settings inside of the local intranet.. ?

Should be

Enable
Enable
Disable
Enable
Enable

We currently set it to parallel the xp pro with ie6 with sp2 security settings of

Prompt
Disable
Disable
Enable
Enable

but that did not work

there was also mention of near the bottom of these settings a sub option of

Active script Enable..??

If there is anyone else that is experiencing this problem

PLEASE supply me with a solution, muchly appreciated

(p.s.: we realize the real answer may be to get a bios flash update from DELL then download SP2, but we cannot rush DELL.. if they determine a patch is needed they will create one for their bios.. ? .. until then, we are at the mercies of your technical genius)

Mozilla does work, with its plug in, but use is NOT comfortable with its look and feel..

Thanking you in advance..

I had the same trouble and some how I fixed it. Try these things if you havent all ready...

Try enabling the scripts in IE by following the steps given below:

1.Open IE and click Tools and select Internet Options.
2.Click Security and click Custom level.
3.Scroll down the tab and enable all the options under "Activex control
and plugins".
4.Also enable the options under "Java VM" in the scroll list.
5.Click Ok.

or.....

My settings for Active X are:

disable
enable
prompt
disable
disable
enable
enable

or... use opera 7

Also, check the information below

Hope this helps

Everyones settings are different depending on user preferences. Don't go by the list above,as it has you ENABLING unsigned ActiveX and DISABLING signed ones.

The general rule of thumb is this as in the order they appear in the TOOLS>SECURITY>CUSTOM LEVEL window:

Download signed ActiveX controls -- ENABLE
if you would like the choice to d/l or not choose -- PROMPT

Download unsigned ActiveX controls -- absolutly not -- choose DISABLE

Intialize & script ActiveX controls NOT marked as safe -- DISABLE

Run ActiveX controls & plug-ins -- ENABLE

Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting -- ENABLE

Downloads
File Downloads -- ENABLE
Font Downloads --ENABLE

Microsoft VM
Java Permissions -- HIGH SAFETY

If you need more help let us know.

Hey cactus- I should have typed out each one of those settings. I started at automatic prompting for active x controls.
