cd burner issues

recently my cd internal cd-rw drive stopped working. whenever i put in a black cd-r in the drive then go to "my computer", the disk is not recognized. when i go into Nero, and go to medium info it says there is nothing in the drive. i found an old USB l.l burner and plugged it in and put in a blank cd and yet again, the blank cd was not recognized. so it appears its not my drives, but an error in XP. what do i do?
