lack of internet connection

Postby tom1mil » Mon Sep 20, 2004 8:51 pm

i recently purchased a pc purely to network with my other pc so i could play poker uninteruppted. i purchased a linksys router and i have adelphia cable internet. my original pc will instantly acess the internet through the network. pc2 has a link light but cannot get on the internet. i have tried using dhcp for both computers and i have tried giving both computers fixed ips. i thought pc2 may have a problem so i hooked it up directly to the modem. sure enough, it won't connect. what could the problem be. I have a new nic in pc2.

#1 check for the latest drivers , possibly there is a update.
#2 did you make sure the cable your using is good? (try switching)
#3 The nic card you just bought could be bad remember static electricity can ruin them.
#4 did you check if you can ping your linksys...
#5 if you can ping your linksys perhaps your linksys was setup to only allow certain mac address's to connect
#6 try reseating the card , perhaps if it is a agp of pci card the slot is bad and not the card.
#7 if you got a installation cd for drivers for the nic card , please take the nic card out unistall the device ... install the software first then reconnect your card.
#8 if all else fails bring it to your local staplez they will install the card for 20$ and make sure it works... if nothing else they will let you know what the problem is and will offer the services to correct the problem.

hope i was helpful ...

the computer says it is connected, it does not show "network cable unplugged", i can do a loop ping, but i cannot ping the router or other computer. i can move pc1to the other end of the ethernet connection i am using for pc2 and it works fine.

Hi tom1mil Image

Make sure both pc's are in the same Workgroup. Also make sure your TCP/IP settings are the same on both pc's.
