XP Pro won't let me go on the internet

Postby soapy » Wed Sep 15, 2004 6:54 pm

Hi! I just upgraded my Win ME to Win XP pro. But my XP won't let me go onto the internet (I'm using cable). It just shows "The Page Cannot Be Display" no matter what site I go to. And I noticed that an icon in the bottom right corner of the screen (those start up programs) had an "X" on it and said that my "Local Area Network2 is unplugged". I phoned my cable service, and they told me to try disabling Local Area Network2 and enabling again but it still didn't work. I'm only able to connect to the internet now by restoring back to Win ME (the internet is working fine in ME)
So I think that the Local Area Network2 is having problems with my network card. It is a SMC EZ CARD 10/100 (SMC1211TX). Is it because the card is too old?
Can someone please help me?
Thank You

Hey soapy
You may just need to update your drivers for the network card.
Check to see if there is a driver that supports XP.

Upgrading to XP is always a pain in the ass unless its a clean install. Did you overwrite/upgrade Windows ME or did your format your pc, and then install windows xp. I've always had problems with XP when I do a version upgrade. Heh...I even had a problem with my own PC when I just reinstalled Windows XP over Windows XP without formatting, lol.

I agree with Nessiah, a fresh install is always recommended over an upgrade :)

Just a guess, about that second nic.

If you started with dial up and had AOL then upgraded and got cable, you've got a real mess. AOL creates a ficticious nic.

Remove the AOL, and see if you can get on.

Another possibility, is that you have Zone Alarm and XP firewall both on.

I would suspect that its a fire wall issue, but unless you have two network cards, which isn't all two common, AOL could be the culprit.

After upgrading or re-installing XP this issue arrises quite often because of a registry alteration. The following is the fix if this is the cause of your problem. Usually all internet access is blocked untill the 25 & 26 keys are deleted.

1. Open the registry editor and navigate to
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP]

2. Right click on the key and choose to export the key as a
precaution.

3. Under the EAP key you will find 4 keys [13], [4], [25] , [26]

4. Right Click on the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\25]
and choose to delete

5. Right Click on the key
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\RasMan\PPP\EAP\26]
and choose to delete

6. Reboot the computer
