Otto go into Device Manager, remove his modem. Physically disconnect from USB port also.
Next, Try doing a search for Files and Folders containing his Modem. (Start>Search>For Files or Folders) If he finds anything delete them.
Also go to Start>Run , type in regedit. Once the Registry Editor comes up click Edit then Find. Now type in Binatone to see if you find any registry keys left behind in the right side, if so delete them.

ALWAYS BACK UP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST

Now insert his modem disc and install the drivers then connect the modem via USB.

This would be the steps I would take. If you still are having trouble the only answer may be to use the to the date before you installed SP2.

Let us know.....

When SP2 was installed it created BACK-UP files...
Did you use the Recovery Console to remove SP2 or just the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS wizard?

Go through the following steps to make sure it was completly removed.
Then we can deal with your Modem.

***ALWAYS BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY BEFORE EDITING***

Turn on the computer with the Win XP disc in the CD/DVD drive.
When prompted to start from the CD, press any key. If
you miss the message and arrive at a blinking cursor, restart the
computer and try pressing any key again when the message appears.

Windows XP Setup prepares to run. If you need to install a third-party
SCSI or RAID driver, press the F6 key during startup.

The option for an Automated System Recovery appears momentarily.

Setup loads the files necessary for the installation, and then starts
Windows.

Press the R key to run the Recovery Console for Windows XP.

Press the number for the corresponding Windows installation for which
you know the administrator password.

After selecting the appropriate Windows installation, type the
administrator password when prompted.

The screen displays a C:\WINDOWS prompt.

At the C:\WINDOWS prompt, type: cd $ntservicepackuninstall$
Press the ENTER key.

At the At the C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$ prompt, type: cd
spuninst Press ENTER.

At the At the C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\SPuninst prompt,
type: batch spuninst.txt Press ENTER.

The batch file manually removes Service Pack 2 from the computer. This process takes several minutes.

At the C:\WINDOWS\$NtServicePackUninstall$\SPuninst prompt, type:
Exit Press ENTER. The computer restarts.

From the Start menu, click Run. In the Run dialog box, type:
Regedit. Click OK.

Locate the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\ServicesRPCSs

In the right pane, double-click ObjectName

An Edit String dialog box displays. In the dialog box, type:
Localsystem Click OK

From the File menu, click Exit to quit Registry Editor

Restart the computer

Open Control Panel

From the Microsoft Windows XP default Start menu, click
Control Panel.

From the classic Start menu, point to Settings, and then click
Control Panel.

In Control Panel, open Add or Remove Programs

If you are in Category View, click Add or Remove Programs.

If you are in Classic View, double-click Add or Remove
Programs
.

In the Add or Remove Programs window, select Windows XP
Service Pack 2, and then click Remove

In the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Removal Wizard dialog box,
click Next.

Service Pack 2 inspects the configuration, checks for necessary disk
space, stops services, restores catalogs, and then runs processes before
removal.

The computer deletes installed SP2 files and copies backup files to the hard drive.

In the Windows XP Service Pack 2 Removal Wizard dialog box,
click Finish to restart the computer.

Post back where your at with it.
