Service Pack 2 Problem

Postby Daninku » Sat Aug 28, 2004 9:53 am

Hey there. I have encoutnered a problem while installing SP2 through Windows Update. Obviously I have Windows XP Pro SP1. An update notification popped up to update SP2. Started normal update installation, downloaded.... After about 2 hours downloading and configuring the system and the whole lot, finally the installation begun. Afterwards, about 5 bloody seconds before it was done an error occured, ACCESS DENIED. This is really really annoying, tried 2 times. I'm very angry with this :evil: If somebody know what this is caused by and he can help me, I will appreciate his help obviously. AND... I have the SP2 log file (svpack.log). And at the very end I noticed these logs:

Basically either you, or some program you use, has changed the permissions on per of the registry such that the sp2 installer cannot access it. Apparently (so I read ) if you look in setupapi.log rather than svcpack.log, you should see the specific regkey that caused the trouble.

Hmm... Ok, so can I post all the setupapi.log here? Because I don't know what to do now, and I don't even know what is wrong with this.

Did you re-install this OS?
Was this OS Pre-Installed on the pc?
Or did you install from CD?

Known SP2 Bugs...

Postby Cactus » Sun Aug 29, 2004 3:46 am

Some of the SP2 issues known so far...

- TCP/IP RAS to a provider which uses Ascend routers. Seems disabling
multilink PPP helps with that one (MSN uses Ascend routers) (CONFIRMED, get
the HOTFIX for a solution).

- Some SCSI CD-Roms (Plextor so far) have problems if there's no CD in the
drive. That freezes NT until there's a CD in it (CONFIRMED).

- Anti-virus monitor programs (MCAFEE, Norton) cause problems, with floppy
access mainly (CONFIRMED, get the HOTFIX for a solution)

- TCPIP.SYS can cause unhandled Kernel errors, causing BSOD and forcing a
reload (CONFIRMED, see MSKB article Q162205 for causes and a solution).

- NTFS.SYS problem. On first reboot after install of SP2, it becomes
corrupted, necessits a reinstall (CONFIRMED, this was caused by the way the
Service Pack file was packaged. This happened only when copying the files
over a network. Microsoft have issued a new file that solves it).

In an effort to head off support calls, Microsoft has published a list
of about 50 programs,
from both the Redmond software giant and
third-party software vendors that require tweaking
in order to work
properly with Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2).

Among the applications that are encountering problems are Web servers,
remote desktops, file-sharing applications, FTP clients, multimedia streaming
software and e-mail notifications. A number of systems-management
applications and games also require manual modifications in order to work
properly with SP2, according to Microsoft.

"After you install Windows XP SP2, client applications may not successfully
receive data from a server," acknowledges Microsoft in one of its
Knowledge Base articles published to its Web site.

At the same time, some "server applications that are running on a Windows
XP SP2-based computer may not respond to client requests," the Knowledge Base article added.

In the months leading up to the recent launch of its SP2 collection of
security updates and other fixes, Microsoft had warned its customers that
a number of its own applications would require modification in order to work
correctly with SP2. Microsoft officials have warned that SQL Server 2000, Microsoft CRM 1.2 and Microsoft Baseline Security Analyzer 1.2 all would require tweaks.

In the recently published Knowledge Base article, Microsoft also admitted that its Visual Studio .Net development tools and Systems Management Server 2003 products may require users to open network ports manually before they work properly with SP2.

"To work correctly, some programs and games must receive information over the network. The information enters your computer through an inbound port. For [the new SP2] Windows Firewall to permit this information to enter, the correct inbound port must be open on your computer," Microsoft notes in its Knowledge Base article.

Other third-party programs that may require users to open ports manually in order to work with SP2 include:

* Autodesk's AutoCAD 2000, 2002 and 2004 releases;

* BMC Software's BMC Patrol for Windows 2000;

* Computer Associates' ARCserve and eTrust 7.0 releases;

* Macromedia's ColdFusion MX Server Edition 6;

* Symantec's AntiVirus Corporate Edition 8.0 and Ghost Server
Corporate Edition 7.5; and

* Veritas' Backup Exec version 9 and Volume Manager 3.1 products.

There are other third-party applications that are encountering difficulties with SP2 that are not included on Microsoft's Knowledge Base list. While Microsoft is characterizing SP2 as a "critical" upgrade and encouraging all XP users to upgrade to it as soon as possible, many IT managers are holding off from pushing SP2 to users' desktops until they are able to thoroughly test its effect on custom and third-party applications.

Did your log get truncated? (Maybe there's a max message size). Can you post just say the last couple of pages? I'd assume the error message will be near the end somewehere :)

About three weeks ago I made a repair using Windows XP Pro CD. Do you think I have to format my HDD so that it will be refreshed completely? And if so, do you suggest that I install SP2 (through windows update) before I install other software?

Well I'm afraid I can't see anything I can make sense of to help you in that log :( Those last few lines seem to suggest it is trying to load some nvidia drivers but it can't find them. Why that is I don't know, sorry.

If you are going to reinstall windows then I would say yes, you should install SP2 before anything else. This will minimize the chances of anything confusing SP2, and also means less work for you if SP2 still doesn't want to play ball.

OH OK don't worry. First I'm gonna increase RAM to 256, so it would be easier, I hope (less crashes, and faster). Then I will format HDD, install windows and SP2 before anything else. However, does someone know about the SP2 CD, i have ordered the CD but I don't know if I will recieve it in the near future. :wobble:

AHHH, sorry... do you know if there are any differences between the SP2 from windows update installation, and that from a CD installation? The fact is that I don't know what shall I choose, or wait for the CD shipping, or else format the HDD as soon as I will increase to 256MB and install SP2 with windows update. Any opinions????

There shouldnt be any differences between the Windows Update site and the CD containing the SP2.
