Hi there, i hope you can help.

My friend is having a problem with his pc. It just one day stopped starting Windows (2000) and hangs on a blue screen just after the POST is done.

It says something like "There may be a new hardware issue or a virus, run chdsk for help" but he hasn't installed any new hardware, only some memory and that was a couple of months ago and it's been working fine till now with it.

He has a lot of important stuff he wants to keep on the hard disc so is there any chance of saving it?

I'm a bit of a novice at this, so sorry if it's a bit vague

thanks...

your options are as follows...

boot from a floppy (you will need to download a copy of ntfsdospro if the drive is formatted to NTFS).. and copy the necessary files to a second partition/drive before re-installing..

OR...

simply re-install windows to the drive WITHOUT formatting it first.. his software will need re-installing but all his documents will stay intact..

unless you have a copy of Hiren's Boot CD, in which case you could probably repair the installation.. even without the admin password..

good luck

Hello, sorry I didn't get back.

I've only just had chance to get round to it.

Right, I backed up his hard disc by hooking it up to my pc as a slave. I then planned to reinstall windows 2000 on his pc so I hooked his hard disc back to his pc and switched it on for a test. Strange thing happened; windows started!

The problem now is a shutdown problem. Everytime I choose shutdown it just restarts. Apparently this happened all the way to when the pc stopped booting.

Any ideas?

In XP you would go to :

Start / control panel / system / advanced / startup and recovery/ uncheck the auto restart box

Should be pretty close for 2000

If your still having problems, you could install 2000 over the top, it would re enumerate your drivers and devices and keep everything else intact.

go for a new install with the CD. Dont format, use same directory, It will find a previous install, and do a repair.

if it is a laptop (assuming not) but just as a throw out for those paying attention .. check you battery settings... START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL
