Lost All Fast User Switching Functionality

Postby varygoode » Thu Jul 08, 2004 4:00 am

first off, i definitely have Windows XP Professional Version 2002. ok well now i can log on as one person, just i can't switch to a different user. when i do log off, switch user, it goes back to the welcome screen and it doesn't have "Logged On" under the name that's still logged on. i then try to log on with a different name and the screen flashes and goes back to the welcome screen. from there i can only log on as one person, therefore, i basically lose all Fast User Switching functionality. i have tried eliminating all my startup items, and that didn't work. i've done things involving "userinit.exe" and also have unchecked the "automatically restart" option in the Startup and Recovery section under the Advanced tab in System. also, in that spot, i picked "NONE" under "Write debugging information". so i've tried all that. i have been told i should try deleting all my user accounts and remaking them, but i don't think that'll do it, and the only other thing i can think of is doing a frikin format/reinstall of Windows XP, which i REALLY DON'T want to do. if there's anything that you guys can advise me on, please do so immediately! thank you!

I'm not sure what has happened, but you need to log on as administrator if you can and copy the "documents and settings" to a directory on the root of C: say OLD_SYSTEM. This will save all of your user data.

If you delete users, you loose access to their MY Documents files. So don't do that, you'll have some unhappy campers!

The way I solved this mess was to copy the My Documents files to another drive, wipe the one I was using and do a reinstall. Then have each user log in for a "first time same id(as used before)" on the new image and then transfer their folder over to [my documents (user)] (logon creates the file)

icecube -- what you are saying to do, i'm saying i don't want to do, maybe a last resort (after every available help alley has been explored)

Restek -- i don't know how to read the event log, i don't know what anything means really. if you could explain what different things are, please, go right ahead.
