where to put drivers?

Postby badpolarbear » Thu Jun 24, 2004 11:28 am

Im working on a pc today. I have to reinstall the modem drivers for a PCTel HSP56k modem. Where is the best place to install them? In the Windows directory or just in Program files? Daniel

Wouldnt it be safe to also put them in C:\Windows\System?

thanks for the help folks, when I worked on the system today the drivers were detected and no need to do anything. Funny I thought when you did a reformat you would have to reinstall the modem driver but not the case here. Daniel

It depends on if it was a restore disc or a fresh install with just the O.S
When you use a restore disc from say an Emachine, all the devices that were in the pc originally will have the drivers on the restore disc along with the O.S, but if your building your own pc you will need to install the drivers manually for all devices, mobo, video card, any pci slot cards and so forth. The O.S. will detect new hardware and the wizard will walk you through the installation. When you have the disc you should always use the "Have Disk" option.

It also depends on the modem - windows includes drviers for quite a few as default :)
