Games causing my monitor to switch off

I have recently just done a clean install of Windows XP onto my Athlon 1100 home PC. I have also just installed a couple of games, one being Civ III, which are experiencing a few problems. When the game loads, it plays through the opening video, and then the monitor clicks off and the led flashes on and off. I can still hear the game through the speakers, but cannot get any action via the monitor. This happens with a couple of the games i have on my machine. I have downloaded all of the windows updates, even a few of the non-critical. One of those was supposed to fix a similar problem. With no change.

Any ideas..

Does your monitor only do this when you play games?
Do you have on-board video or a video card?
