no sound

hi,

I have a very strange thing happening here.
I install a new system with following items:
mobo ASUS p4p800-vm, sound onboard = AC97
512 MB ram
120 Gb disk
I install a fresh copy of XP, install the necessary drivers, and all is well in the land of the unsuspecting......
BUT i have no sound : i cannot play a sound via Control Panel- Sounds
nothing. I tested the speakers, tried with an earphone, no sound.
I tried with the mobo out of the box, only screen and sound connected, still no sound. I happen to have a second identical mobo (also new), so I hook it up out of the box : sound !! - without modifying anithing
I put it in the box : no sound; out of the box : no sound. I verify everything 3-4 times : no damage or touching things visible
So i think it must be a file or driver which is corrupted or locked up.
Needless to say i deleted the sound in the device manager several times and reinstalled it

DOES ANYBODY HAVE AN IDEA ABOUT WHAT COULD BE GOING ON HERE ??

I apologise for the long thread, but i needed it to explain everything as complete as possible

Sweet board

I know you probably don't want to use a sound card, but have you tried one?
Its possible you got a bad mobo. I had to return a mobo twice because it was bad before.

You stated you tried a second board and had sound, did you then put it in the case and now you have no sound on it too?

Its possible that your case is shorting it out. Have you tried in another case?

Have you checked to see if they are muted? Sounds / Volume / Advanced

well fellows, first of all thank you for thinking with me.

I think i got it sorted out. It looks like the front side sound connections are the culprit. You know, the ones you have to put on pin by pin. they must short somewhere. Never had this in my previous experience, but i must say it was the first time we used this kind of case (btw it's Enermax) and we were thinking about making it our standard case; but now....??

Anyhow, thanks to y'all

bye and sweet dreams
