This is a known issue with some update for WMP but it has a simple fix.

Reboot your system.
Open cmd.exe as an administrator by
Click Start. Type Command. Right-click Command Prompt, and then click Properties.
On the Shortcut tab, click Advanced.
Select the Run as administrator check box.
In the command box type in

unregmp2.exe /UpdateWMPVersion

Press enter.

Or you can use MS Fix it for me tool found here http://go.microsoft.com/?linkid=9758651
After the download just run the file that is downloaded

You can try to re-register the wmp.dll file
Open cmd.exe as an administrator again and type in the following

regsvr32 wmp.dll

And press enter
See if WMP works

If that doesn't fix it disable and re-enable the player
Go to Start and in the search bar type "Turn Windows features On or Off".
Click on "Turn Windows features On or Off".
Browse to Media Features and place a check mark in front of Windows Media Player.
Restart the Computer.

Do the above again turn it back on and restart again see if it works.

I'm sorry to say none of that worked. Even system restore is not working.

No Retract retract retract...did a full restart

It work a treat, and I fixed the IE problem as well.

I have been using MSconfig and I believe this has upset something, is this the possible cause?

I was trying to make my memory usable in the advance boot option. This is obviously a dangerous option to get involved with.

thank you all for your help.

Best regards

Julian

Yep, messing with MSconfig will affect how it runs!
