Ms-Word Problem

I was making a project in MS-Word.I didnt know how to make an index file so i googled and followed the instructions given on this page

I pressed Alt+Shift+X and in the main entry i wrote Index and pressed enter but all the symbols of all files in my pc have become weird like this

What should i do?
