HUGE direct x .net problem

Hello

I am doing a computing degree but I cant sort this problem out... every time I try and install direct x I get

c: blah blah/ mscorwks.dll is either not designed to run on windows or it contains an error, try installing the program again..

I have uninstalled both direct x and .net and reinstalled then.. restarted and I cant get this error to go away... please help me
