I broke it, can I save it?
Posted: Thu Sep 01, 2011 1:42 amJust monkeying around with my computer trying to solve a microstutter that haunts my gaming (single gpu, radeon 5450) and had the 'bright' idea to see what the the nvidia tuner I had assumed I installed alongside d3d overrider had to say. So I ran nvidia tuner (or whatever it is called) which came up with an error, then it said I need to disable 'driver signing' and reboot, and so I did. There may have been a few other things I did, but nothing stands out in my memory as a possible culprit.
Everything is wrong. Windows take several seconds per page when browsing, the only game I tried to play was completely unplayable, the text I am typing shows up a half second after I press the key, the monitor seems out of focus and blurry, this computer is currently doing nothing as it should. When I check the task manager I see nothing out of the ordinary, the performance moniter says all my resources are free, using no more than 10% of my cpu, disbritued among the cpus seemingly properly, no more than 1 quarter of my ram used... but the computer is running lik crap.
When I tried to simply re enable device driver signing (hoping that alone would magicly solve all this) all I got was a reply that the command bcdedit was not a recognized command. Gonna try a windows repair... but dumbass me I have no restore points. Anyone have any idea what could screw a computer up THIS bad so fast? I figure it must be somethig special, so I though perhaps someone might recognize the symptons. Appreciate any wisdom.
Edit - Reinstalling catalyst seems to have taken the worst out of this, at least browsing the internet isn't painful anymore. But when I load up Fate (fairly low demand game) I now sit at ~20, whereas before I reinstalled catalyst I was at ~10, and before this problem I was comfortable at 59-60 and the problem I was trying to address was a 'microstutter' that seems very trivial now. What I notice is that when I load the game my memory usage does not increase... not sure if that means anything or not.
Edit2 - Uninstalling my video drivers, running driver sweeper and reinstalling the newest drivers has me back to the original microstutter problem, where the game seems laggy even though the fps is 55+. But at least my computer ain't 'broke' anymore. Amazing how much trouble was caused by me activiting a manager for a conflicting driver set, and allowing it to do its thing.
