Strange hang up/freeze of entire system and dvd drive issues

Postby jhen » Wed Jul 18, 2012 10:15 pm

Hi all

System spec: Win 7 64bit Home Premium
i7 2630qm, 8gb RAM, 640 HD, Nvidia GT 540m, blue ray drive

First problem: my dvd drive doesn't seem to work properly/at all. I insert a data disk and it reads it as a blank dvd. Have tried other disks including standard movie dvds and legit software disks and all are read as blanks. I'm not sure when it began as I haven't used my optical drive for a long long time.

First time I noticed the issue was when I received Diablo 3 a few days after launch and tried to install via dvd. After a lot of googling I think I had to disable firewall/anti virus etc to install it off the disk. Have tried same thing lately but does not seem to work which is a major problem linked to my second issue...

Second problem: lately (the last two weeks or so) my system will lock up for seemingly no reason. It locks up to the point where I get the "not responding" message on the top bar of most open windows, programs like Origin and Steam will have a additional box silhouette similar to when explorer windows and Firefox windows "grey" out when being non responsive. I can alt tab ok to cycle through open windows and programs but am not able to click on any buttons within said windows/programs.

The main taskbar at the bottom of the screen is also un clickable including the windows button. control alt deleting does not work - the system takes a long time, anything up to 10 minutes to register the ctrl+alt+del so the screen blanks out for a few minutes before giving an error message that it was unable to bring up the usual options and to power down and restart system if needed.

I can mouse over the desktop no problems and the icons I mouse over are highlighted. I can try to double click to open them but no response for a long long time.

In Firefox if I have a video or audio going on I can hear it continue (same for iTunes) but can not navigate to the actual window or tab.

After a while it appears to go back to normal allowing me to close an open explorer window or navigate Firefox a little but it usually goes back to "not responding" mode after a minute or two and the system locks up again.

I have done several reformats and clean installs of windows since...BUT, as my optical drive refuses to work properly I can not install a lot of programs/games etc from disc.

I have scanned numerous times with Avast, Adaware, Spybot, MalwareBytes and CCleaner to check for any malware of viruses as I did get some "welcome to nginx" messages in Firefox, even after a completely fresh reformat but all scans have found nothing.

I have also done a ram check using Windows 7 inbuilt tool. Also opened my laptops RAM bay to remove and re-seat ram modules.

As far as I know I have no clue what is wrong with my laptop :( as the system locking up has continued even after a reformat I can only assume it's not a software issue or am I wrong?

Any help in this would be greatly appreciated as I'm losing my mind trying to fix my laptop so that it's stable. I'm tired of surfing the net, watching iplayer, watching a vid, doing whatever and then my system locks up and the only thing I can do is do a hard reset and even then the next boot up may only last 5 minutes before it locks up again! :(

Thank you!!!
