Horrible Freezing up problem

I bought a computer 5 months ago, and can barely use it. I bought it mainly for video editing, but it freezes up very often. Here is the system: It's a custom PC from internetishop.com (IIRC). Athlon 3.6, 1g RAM, 80g HD, and some other goodies. I did not get an os from them, and I used a copy of XP pro. After having a bit of trouble installing it, and getting all of the drivers done it started to work ok. But here is the problem: Everytime I'm downloading video into the computer using my DV camera with Adobe premeire via firewire it will totally freeze up. have to restart. and it's not just when I'm doing video, it's basically anytime now. Sometimes it even freezes up while booting up! Othertimes the computer can run for like 20 minutes before freezing on the screensaver. Sorry for the long story, but I paid a lot of $ for this and I want it to work correctly. Please if you have any insight on what my problem could be, please let me know!

By a "copy" of WinXp do you mean you used another Computer's WinXp CD?
If that's the case, that's not legal. You need to purchase and install a new/fresh WinXp Disk.

Yes, Unfortunatly that is the case. Do you think that is the only problem? Any ideas on what might be a good OS for video editing (not too expensive).

I'd say all those 0's in the Subsciption ID say it all. You need to purchase a legitamate WinXp CD. I'd suggest WinXp Pro for video editing.

Any ideas on price? I can't spend a lot. I'm quite unfamiliar with linux, do most windows programs work with that or, is it totally different system like OSX?

Aside from the legality issues, having a copy of XP shouldn't make it crash. Have you tried installing the latest service pack & going to windowsupdate.com ?
