Re-installing Windows (hopefully)

Postby Torquay-Pete » Thu Dec 29, 2005 7:58 am

Hello to all and Seasons Greetings  I have a problem here and I am at a loss as to what to do next.
My PC has been a bit ropey for a few months IE running oddly at times, Im know I have a couple of Trojans that I cannot delete (but have worked around these) but now I have decided to grab the Bull by the Horns and re-install windows XP Home.
This is where things get interesting!! As I have SP2 I cant Put windows back in because this is an older version, I cant delete or un-install SP2 (It wont let me) so what next??
I have 2 hard drives, C drive which has the OS installed and E drive which I use for all my Music and DVD`s and Photo`s ect. I saved all these files and formatted E drive ready to install windows on here but as you probably guessed I cant install windows on here either  It says to put the CD Rom in and boot from here but I dont have that option when the CD Rom is inserted. All my help and support files have disappeared from the system so no Joy here. Is there a way around this?? Do I need to disconnect C Drive and install from fresh on E Drive?? Totally Baffled Pete
PS thanks as always

There are two ways to get around the install problem you are having.

1. You need to set the BIOS to boot from your CD drive first.
When the system is booting press the delete key to enter the BIOS
Once in the BIOS look for the boot order and set it for CD Rom drive first.
Now drop the XP CD in and reboot the system the XP install window should come up.
You should then be able to delete the C drive partition and then install into the
unformatted partition that you just created by deleting the partition on C drive.

2. The other thing you can do is slipstream sp2 and burn a CD
so you would now have a Windows XP Sp2 install CD.
Follow this link for complete instructions on how to slipstream sp2.

Hi thanks for your Help  While I was waiting for a reply this morning I had a look around the site and found a link for some Bootable Floppy`s (6 in all!!!) I went ahead and did a n install using the repair option, Now This has really f**@d things up!!
There were about 20 files that could not be copied (but I went ahead anyway) Now the whole system takes about 15 mins from pressing the reset button to showing my Desktop!!
I now no longer have a sound Device !! When I right click on anything to see the properties I get Zilch and to top it all My incredimail has ceased to be, so I have really caused havoc!!
The only good thing is I still have my Internet connection( So Far)
Now I think Ill go and Boil my Head!!
Happy New Year Pete (Freezin` Devon UK)

Well at this point I would start backing up anything you want to save like
Bookmarks, email setting and address book, ftp bookmarks, music, pictures

Then I would try a full scandisk you might have a bad sector :(
Next I would try an other repair install

If you are going to do an XP install, remove all other hard drives. Remove printers and scanners and anything plugged into the usb ports.

You want to have just one hard drive. Install the O/S. At that point, I would install your anitvirus software, then do the windows updates--service pack two will be one of them. Then hook up your other drive.

you should be good to go from there.

Hello again, first of all thanks for all your help  I have re-installed windows on my second hard drive, and after much chasing around the house looking for all the various driver CD`s My system is up and running again, However (there is always a However). I downloaded Nero 7 from their website and tried to install this but got the error message " Cant extract to temp folder etc etc" this also says that I might not have permission to write to this folder?? Any Ideas Please?. Also did the Slipstreaming with the SP2 thingy, burned the boot CD rom and attempted to salvage my original C drive, all went well until It says insert SP2 disc and press enter when precisley Sod all happened it just sat there for 20 mins until I go fed up waiting and Scuttled the attempt!! I think Ill just re-format the drive and have done with it. so thanks again to all who helped.......Until we meet again Bye for now Pete

Not sure if this is related or not but....

I recently went through a windows repair, after replacing a MB on my primary comp. My comp ran like extremely poor and super slow until I updated Windows several times...

took half the day of updating and reinstalling drivers untill the system seems to be running pretty well....

so try updating windows and see if that helps....

Good on ya

Hi again and thanks for the tip about updating, I still have a few bugs to iron out. the first is the Nero 7 problem, I downloaded this from their website and tried to install this but get the error that "Cant install to this temp folder" as I dont have permission to write to this ??.Also after 15 mins of running sweetly the PC seems to slow right down (whatever is running at the time) and the CPU is at 100% constantly, Now this is Puzzling me?? any help on these 2 issues would be welcome as usual.
So time to go Have a Happy New year everyone!! Pete

I don’t see anything bad in the log, however,
D:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\lib\NMBgMonitor.exe
Is part of Nero Home and Nero Scout, they watch for new media files that can be played via Nero.
It also performs an indexing of all your files that can be played via Nero.
That is where all the cpu usages is going to.

From what I have read you can disable this and your cpu usage should go way down and not affect anything else in Nero.
To disable this process press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on the following:
NMBgMonitor.exe

To remove it from the system startup have HiJackThis Fix:
O4 - HKCU\..\Run: [BgMonitor_{79662E04-7C6C-4d9f-84C7-88D8A56B10AA}] "D:\Program Files\Common Files\Ahead\lib\NMBgMonitor.exe"

As to why you are getting the install error I have no answer, obviously something is getting installed by Nero.
