Nameserver and web hosting The last step

Postby fishoutofwater579 » Mon Feb 14, 2005 1:27 pm

Ok I have everything ready. I have my webserver sitting next to me and my website ready to be added to it. I also have the domain name it will be put on. The thing I need is how to make the site viewable or in easier terms how to apply the domain name to the website I have made. So how do I do it? I really would like to get it up and running ASAP so quick help would be appreciated. Thanks guys.

What are you using for a web server?

Lets assume that you have a router hooked up to a static IP provided by your ISP and your server is hooked into the router. Your ISP will help you with the marrying the IP to your Registered Domain Name and you should be seen by all of the net within in 48 hours.

Normally its a package deal: domain name and fixed ip address sold by the ISP. They give you a sheet a paper with your ip settings for your router and your up and away.

If you don't have the luxury to afford a static IP you can go to NoIP.com or DYNU.com and fiddle around with that

Some of that probably has changed since I did a few some years back :|

I am confused by your statement "how to apply the domain name to the website I have made" Your domain name is linked to an IP address in whois, that IP address is linked to your router.

Hope this helps a little

Well now it is a different problem I think. I am running Server 2003 Enterprise. So now I got to the point where I have the nameserver the domain and everything. I am running with the ISP comcast which doesn't allow you to host a server for anything on thier bandwith. So I went to dyndns.org in order to get a nameserver to point to my IP. From there whenever I try to ping the nameserver it shows my IP address. From there I port forwarded my server on my router so when it sees someone on port 80 it goes to the server. I have also set up the forward lookup zone in my server to my domain name. The website is in place and ready for take off. The problem is when I ping the name server (which is directed to my IP) it does not reply, therefore I cannot use it as a nameserver on godaddy.com where I have my domain. How do I get all of this crap working together?
