Hey n82 ...

Try going to start>find>files/folders
type:
quickrestore

That should at least take you to the QuickRestore folder where you can locate the file from.

Replacement Restore CD's
Compaq FAQ indicates the cost is $10.00. Here is the link from the FAQ.

For Quickrestore CDs:
http://qrcons.orderz.com/page1.asp

http://www.compaqqrsettlement.com/

Just in case anyone else wasn't aware, I wanted to share the class
action settlement link above, where you can file a claim form to get the
free Compaq Presario Quick Restore CD's.

NOTE: The deadline for submitting a Claim Form is December 31, 2004

Assuming cactus is correct, what drive letters do you have? C: will be your main drive, what else is there?

The Quick Restore folder should be on "D" drive.
You will be unable to use QuickRestore that way if they are not there. Sounds like the files were accidently deleted.
You will need the QR CD's...

Try getting a hold of Compaq (HP)about replacing the CD's.
If you have access to other Operating System OEM disc you could reformat the HDD removing any Partitions and creating a single drive.
Before doing anything like that I would note all the onboard devices as well as the installed ones, save the drivers or you'll be searching later.

Your absolutly sure this OS cannot be repaired...

Did you do a cleaning?

Download and Install

CHECK FOR UPDATES
Set these for a Custom Scan
click the gear wheel at the top and check these options:

General> activate these: "Automatically save log-file" and "Automatically quarantine objects prior to removal"

Scanning > activate these: "Scan within archives", "Scan active processes", "Scan registry", "Deep scan registry", "Scan my IE Favorites for banned sites" and "Scan my Hosts file"

Tweaks > Scanning Engine> activate this: "Unload recognized processes during scanning."

Tweaks > Cleaning Engine: activate these: "Automatically try to unregister objects prior to deletion" and "Let Windows remove files in use after reboot."

Click "Proceed" to save your settings, then click "Start", make sure "Activate in-depth scan" is ticked green then scan your system. When the scan is finished, the screen will tell you if anything has been found, click "Next". The bad files will be listed, right click the pane and click "Select all objects" - this will put a check mark in the box at the side, click "Next" again and click "OK" at the prompt "# objects will be removed. Continue?".

Ensure you Reboot after running Ad-Aware if it found objects
to remove, so it can properly remove them.

Then Download,Install,Update then.. Run
Fix everything in RED

If cleaning doesn't work you'll have to either get a hold of the QR CD's or do a complete re-install.
