Postby goo » Sun Oct 17, 2004 12:37 pm

when i create a new connection i cannot apply the firewall. it says:

The creation of the firewall failed with the following error:
* Cannot complete this function.

This connection has been created, but does NOT have the firewall enabled.

the connection works fine. but no firewall. and when i edit it and apply the firewall it says:

Network Connections (the caption of the messagebox)
Cannot enable shared access.
Error 1003: Cannot complete this function.

there... any ideas?

Have you tried BOTH of these methods:

To enable Internet Connection Firewall feature using the Network Setup Wizard:

1. Run the Network Setup Wizard. To access this wizard, point to Control Panel, double-click Network and Internet Connections, and then click Setup or change your home or small office network.
2. The Internet Connection Firewall is enabled when you choose a configuration in the wizard that indicates that your computer is connected directly to the Internet.

To configure Internet Connection Firewall manually for a connection:

1. In Control Panel, double-click Networking and Internet Connections, and then click Network Connections.
2. Right-click the connection on which you would like to enable ICF, and then click Properties.
3. On the Advanced tab, click the box to select the option to Protect my computer or network.
4. If you want to enable the use of some applications and services through the firewall, you need to enable them by clicking the Settings button, and then selecting the programs, protocols, and services to be enabled for the ICF configuration.

So this is the Windows ICF (Internet Connection Firewall) your having trouble enabling?
Have you installed SP2?

The Windows ICF and firewall that comes with the SP2 only block incoming access attempts. So if Trojan or other malware made it in (through email, downloads, IMs, or some other means) and then tried to spread itself or phone home with your passwords or credit card numbers, those firewall would happily pass that along!

If your using a router w/ firewall or have another firewall installed like ZoneAlarm I wouldnt worry much about the O.S. firewalls.
