Always-on broadband connections

Postby ronz28 » Thu Oct 07, 2004 12:12 pm

Hi, I live in Korea and recently upgraded from a 2Mbps ADSL line to an 8.5Mbps when I moved houses. I wasn't there for the install and came home to find that I have a different style external modem and an "always-on" connection. In the past, I always setup a username/password connection and that is what I want now. How can I do it? My usual way doesn't work, it times out at "Connecting through WAN pppoe." Am I stuck like this? Thanks,

Ronny

however just before i was gonna click send i went to my network connections,
control pannel/network connections, then right clicked my modem and went to properties, if you go to the options tab it has some stuff like promt for name and passsword, certificate, etc.. mine is ticked, maby yours is unticked? try ticking it and see if that makes you have to connect.

Yes, prompt for username and password is exactly where I'm trying to get to. On my Network connections there are only my NICs and 1394 (My manual connection used to be on this page before). I can't find the modem properties anywhere in Device Manager. There is no connection in the "Internet Properties" page which you get to through Network/Internet, Setup/Change your internet connection. This is where my prior connection would be, also. Maybe this is how I have to be now, just thought I'd ask u guys. Thanks,

Ronny

It may depend how the modem is set up - for example if I connect my modem by ethernet cable to the modem, then all properties are set in the NIC options & no drivers or setting exist for the modem. However if I connect it by USB, I get a separate connection listed in network devices.
