A mate of mine is having a problem with his internet connection. About a week ago he found himself unable to connect to the internet. We checked, and he no longer has a connection listed in Network Connections. Attempting to add one using the wizard does not work as the option button for adding a dialup connection is greyed out.
Have tried to add a new connection via Internet Options in the control panel. We get "Error 711 Cannot load Remote Access Service Connection Manager."
Ok, at this point I checked the services relating to his network connections. The Remote Access Connection manager and a few of its dependants were stopped. When attempting to restart the Remote Access Connection Manager service I got "Could not start the Remote Access Connection Manager service on Local Computer. Error 5: Access is denied". We had logged in as administrator by the way so should have full access permissions. Also got errors when attempting to start any of the other services relating to network connections. Even when set to automatic these services do not start.
Now I have done a bit of research and come up with a couple of workarounds. I have followed Microsoft's instructions as can be seen here:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=329441
We tried:
- re-installing Windows XP (only an upgrade over the top, as he had files that he did not want to lose)
- checked the 'ObjectName' key was correct
- deleted the two keys in the RasMan dir as per Microsoft kb
Also tried this:
- Browse to the %SystemRoot%\inf\Sr.inf file.
- Right-click the %SystemRoot%\inf\Sr.inf file and press Install.
- Press Browse in the Files Needed dialog box and select the Sr.sys file from the i386 folder of the Windows XP CD-ROM.
The OS he is using is Windows XP Home SP1
As yet nothing has worked. Also, i can't quite work out why these services have been disabled. He has not done anything major to his pc like upgrade Windows or install any new s/w. It just happened out of the blue one day. Have since run SpyBot S&D on his pc and it came up with a few spyware programs. Would a malicious script have been the cause of this.
Cheers guys
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
