PS. If it's of any aid to you whatever is causing the page problems is also blocking my email that I use on Outlook via my good ISP ( dont use the other ISP's email ).

Sorry - I should have been more specific, you run the ping command from the command prompt. Go to start menu, all programs, accessories and you should have a command prompt option.

Run the following commands one at a time (i.e. press enter after each one) and tell us the output. The do the same when connected to your working ISP:

ping pctechforums.com

ping 67.19.6.2

nslookup pctechforums.com

ipconfig /all

At the moment I’m getting no pages on either ISP, I’ve run the commands on my ISP that normally works, my other ISP ( the one normally giving me the hassle ) is only accessible off peak and I’ve still a few hours at the time of writing before I can access it.

Pinging this site by name using my normally working ISP returned the message “Unknown host”

Pinging by number returned 4 Request timed out replies

Doing the nslookup command gave 2 DNS request timed out replies

Also got the same 4 Request timed out pinging my ISP.

Chances are I'll get the same output from the other ISP.

I’ve got the output of ipconfig from both ISPs but dunno how to send it or how much detail you want, I screendumped it, it’s in jpeg format at the moment, is there an option on this site to attach files, I can’t see one or do you just want a few bits of info ?

Something seems to have bizarrely corrected itself and I can download the pages now. I didn't stay logged on long so it didn't screw up Explorer again.

I got normal replies to the ping commands ( no packet loss ).

When I did nslookup pctechforums.com on the dodgy site the info I got was

Server: resolver1.svr.pol.co.uk
Address 195.92.195.94

Non-authoritative answer:
Name: pctechforums.com
Address: 67.19.6.2

Just wondered if that was ok.

As for the ipconfig stuff

The working ISP is

Description : WAN <PPP/SLIP> Interface
DHCP Enabled : No
IP Address : 62.253.84.253
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway : 62.253.84.253
DNS Servers: 194.168.4.100
194.168.8.100

No information displayed about the lease

The dodgy ISP info is

Description : WAN <PPP/SLIP> Interface
DHCP Enabled : No
IP Address : 62.25.168.59
Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.255
Default Gateway : 62.25.168.59
DNS Servers: 195.92.195.94
195.92.195.95

Again no info displayed about the lease.

I assumed you didn't want my local settings but let me know otherwise.

I'm not really sure what to suggest sorry - if you are losing both together, but they sometimes work then it tends to rule out the ISP or any specific connection settings. Since you are losing email & web browsing, this tends to rule out any specific program settings which doesn't really leave much other than a glitchy modem, something with your line and/or modem driver.

Your suggestion that it's something to do with busy times on the web is possible, but I see you're with ntl and they're a big company who I would expect to be able to get you online even when they are busy...

Hmmm...its possible I guess. I have a USB modem, it disconnects easily when someone picks up the phone in the house (a wireless phone you press a button to get a line), think its the way its designed, it wasn't a particularly expensive one but I've had it a while and so long as nobody uses the phone it seems to work ok. Won't take long to re-install the driver for it, I'll give it a go and check the lead as well. Maybe I need a better modem or just switch to broadband.

Hey Joe_90
Do you have filters on your phone lines?

I apologize I must of read you post wrong I thought you were getting disconnected from the internet at random and sometimes without a filter on the phone lines you can get garbage and interference. I'm not sure if the same problem would arise with a USB modem.

If you're using DSL then you do need filters on all you other phone lines. Not using them can get you "kicked-off" but wouldn't keep you off forever.
Have your ISP trace your line.

Well I've re-installed my modem, or rather another modem of the PCI variety but I'm still getting the same crap. It occurred to me that during the brief time that the net connection did work I was trying to download something, trying to remember what it was but it failed saying I could have a corruption on my registry, is this liikely to mean I need to do a re-install of my operating system ?
