Win XP SP2 problem with spyware, per CNN--help!!

Postby K27 » Tue Sep 07, 2004 4:39 pm

Hi,

I just tried to install SP2 yesterday using MS automatic update, and my PC completely died, froze up, could not be revived (and my husband is an expert at this stuff--he tried everything!). Later in the day, I read on CNN that Microsoft admits that if you have any spyware, it could "pose a problem" when installing SP2. NOW they tell us!! (You may want to post a warning to your other users.)

CNN article should be found here: www.cnn.com/2004/TECH/ptech/09/06/windo ... index.html

Prior to installing SP2, just by chance I did a Spybot S&D and got rid of all but one of the 13 items found. Tried to get rid of the last one but it kept popping up again (this was BEFORE I knew about Microsoft's announcement, otherwise I never would have gone ahead with the SP2 update). Not sure what it was called, possibly DSO Exploit.

Now we have reinstalled the original XP as a last resort. And I have been running AdAware SE and Spybot S&D, and continue to discover the following:

AdAware:

Vendor:Possible Browser Hijack attempt
Category:Data Miner
Object Type:RegData
Size:12 Bytes
Location:...\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main "Start Page" ("about:blank")
Last Activity:9-7-2004
Risk Level:Moderate
TAC index:3
Comment:Possible Browser Hijack attempt
Description:Possible attempt to control/redirect the browser. This object referrs to a "blacklisted" site. If the site listed is the site intended (in other words, it is set to the setting you wish it to be set to), add this listing to your ignorelist. If not, then selecting this item will reset your browser to the default setting for this item.

Spybot S&D:

DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-18\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-21-124585705-393157022-2302806402-1003\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-20\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\S-1-5-19\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, nothing done)
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Zones\0\1004!=W=3

ITONE OF THEM ALSO found something else (can't remember what) but that seems to be gone now. My questions are, a) are these things spyware, and b) do you think it's now safe to install SP2? I'd like to do it before I go through the exercise of reinstalling all my programs!! Lastly, would you like me to create and post a Hijack This Log?

Thanks so very much!

It is not adviseable to SAVE HTJ to a TEMP FOLDER.
That is where the BACKUPS will be saved,and we'll be DELETING those files...Image

Please COPY and PASTE the HJT exe and backups to the New folder.
Create a permanent folder
EG---- Open MyDocuments----Right click an empty spot and select NEW---Folder----Name the new folder HJT ---this is where you will want to save Hijackthis too, also, backups will be stored there.

Sorry, I had put the logfile in \MyDocuments\HijackThis folder but I guess the downloaded HJT zip file and exe file ended up in the root. All done, if there are others they are old and can be deleted no problem. Which I will do right now.

Thanks.

Image...your Logfile looks clean K27!

Below are 2 links to MS to explain which APPS are causing some probs with the SP2 install.
The links might be able to tell you what software is conflicting with the SP2 D/L.

If your still having probs after reading the info,post back here.

Hello K27 Image

I noticed in your logfile you have Norton Anti-Virus installed. Now rule of thumb when I work on pc's, if I'm installing any type of program, update, application ...blah blah I always disable my anti-virus so it doesn't interfer with the d/l.

Have you tried that?

Thanks so much, Cactus!! I guess the stuff I saw is nothing to worry about....

Will check out the articles to make sure I have bases covered.

Geekgirl, thanks for the tip, I always (when I remember!) disable NAV when installing something. You shoulda seen me try to reinstall NSW 2004 today--had to uninstall some ancient remnants of 2003 first--but it worked!

Looks like I'm on my way. Thanks so much!!
