DVD burning

Postby ronz28 » Mon Sep 06, 2004 2:52 am

Hi, I'm posting my question here 'cause I don't know if it's a hardware or software problem, maybe u can help me. I have been through over 15 Fujifilm DVD-Rs since acquiring my burner, a Pioneer A0-6 dual format. I have used HP's DLA, WriteDVD's drag-to-disc and Nero. All have burned the disc but no pc can read them. Explorer says something like "Incorrect function, F: is not accessible" or "Please insert disk". I've been making CDs for years but have not once made a readable DVD. I'm trying to back-up videos, mp3's and pictures. I could do it with CDs but that's why I bought the DVD burner in the first place. I'm using an HP Pavilion 762n, 2.26P4, 768MB RAM, 55GB free hard drive space. Even the computer that burns the DVD will not read it after I re-insert it back in the drive. Can anyone shed some light on my problem?

The fact that the burn times are so different is worrying - however from the sound of things, that DLA prog is writing in 'packet writing' format whereas the other 2 are writing proper sessions. However, Nero and writeDVD should take the same amount of time. I'm more familiar with Nero, so lets stick with that for the time being. What version of Nero is it? When you put the disk in, run Nero, cancel the wizard if it comes up & go to recorder, then disk-info (or press ctrl-I).

What does it say about your dvdr?

Okay, it's version 5.5.10.32. I put in the disc I just tried to burn this morning and using Nero's Info tool, it says blank DVD-R, 4.383GB available, and everything else is N/A. Under configuration, DMA is off. I've read about that before, shouldn't it be on?

If DMA is off then you may get slower burns, but it shouldn't stop it entirely. You can turn it on in device manager - go to your IDE controller, and you can set DMA under there. If Nero says that the DVD is blank, then I'd beleive it :) Assuming you definitely haven't clicked on any 'simulation' buttons in Nero (when you burn you can select to run a test/simulation as well as or instead of writing it) then personally I would suspect the hardware. Since CD & DVD writing uses different lasers, I would suspect that the DVD laser might be duff. Can you read pre-mastered DVDs? Is the drive still under warranty?
