hard disk read only problem

Postby mikeUK » Thu Aug 12, 2004 12:12 pm

hi,

I have a maxtor external 200gb hard disk connected up to a windows xp machine via usb 1, the files from my office computer (9gb worth) have been transfered to this disk for the other users in the office network (4 pcs) to use

I then decided to connect the disk via firewire to my new office standalone data server workstation running windows server 2003, the harddrive is connected fine and reads the files.

The only problem is, the server is saying the files are read only and wont write to the disk, iv tried changing the properties of the folder, which it lets me do and says it has changed the attributes. Then when i work on a file and go to save, it still comes up saying the folder and files are read only and cannot be written to.

I then plug the harddrive back into the pc via usb and change the properties, plug it back into the server, same problem happens again.

please help!

thanks for listening :D

regards

mike

Just a guess, but server2003 might just need the usb drive attached before bootup.

The reason I say this, Is that most system administrators would cringe at the idea of someone coming into their shop and pluging in a usb drive to a server--thats not nice
