Windows XP has a Network Setup Wizard that easy to use.
Click on Start > Control Panel, click on Network Connections, now click on File and select Network Setup Wizard this will walk you through setting up your home network.
I would also suggest that you use consider a software firewall, Windows XP has one that you can use. There are also many others, one I would recommend is ZoneAlarm they have a free version you can get from there website
