privacy issue

hope this is the right place for this...
i have a broadband connection in my rented accomadation, four of us use this connection, the landlord being one, this is where the hub (that the right term?) is located. I have one ethernet cable connected to my pc that runs into the router (is that different from hub, if so then forget hub and keep router) I'm not worried about if he can check what websites i go to, it seems pretty obvious that he could and can, and probably does. but i was wondering how easy it would be for him to access my hard drive, and if so, what i can,if anything, to prevent it.

i have remote desktop and remote assistance turned off, if that makes any difference

Hello bunnyoku, welcome to the forums

As long as you are not "sharing" your C: drive the only thing someone else could access is your shared documents folder.

To check your C: drive sharing, go to My computer and right click on your C: drive, now select properties.
On the sharing tab make sure no boxes are checked under the "Network sharing and security" section.

To unshared you shared documents folder:
Go to My computer and right click on your shared documents folder now select properties.
On the sharing tab uncheck both boxes under the "Network sharing and security" section.

As far as someone being able to tell where you are surfing they cannot unless you are logging onto a server.
