Removing Norton Anti-virus Please Help!

Postby MayMay » Thu Mar 03, 2005 4:24 pm

Please help!

I recently upgraded to windows XP from windows 98. I had Norton running on 98 but now it says XP doesn't have any anti-virus protection enabled. I tried installing newer Norton version BUT new version won't install. It says that I have to un-install old version. I did uninstall thru add or remove programs under control panel and tried deleting the file off my windows explorer too. BUT it still won't install.

Does anyone know what other files are associated so I can wipe it clean to install the new version??!!

Go and enter 'uninstall' into the search box. You will get a few pages of manual techniques for uninstalls that won't work for some reason. Not knowing what Norton product you are running means we can't give you specific help.

I had the same problem after trialling Norton Internet Security and then buying the full version on disk. You have to go all over the place to delete things... you get there in the end though and it could be your job will be simpler :)

Go to and download Reghance. Top left on menu under software.

Install it. Run the program. Select edit and then select seach. Type in "Norton" in the find window. drop a few lines down and check the box "entire registry." then click on find all. After it finds all of them, click on delete and you should be able to install Norton after a reboot.

I have used this program to get out of a catch 22. Some virus' disable virus scan software. At that point you cannot reinstall the software because it believes its already there.

Consider the fact that where you are at right now, could be the result of a virus.

If your running some other Norton products, like Norton System Works, the above might not be a cool thing to run. It could torque out your system. You would first need to remove all Norton software before using the phrase "Norton" as a search paramenter in the Reghance program.

After running Reghance, the Norton should install AOK. Then do the update.
