Full Disk Encryption - Sophos

My company uses Sophos for full disk encryption. Simple question: How does Encryption software work in regards to a Windows XP or 7 machine? In the past versions of encryption when you booted the machine it would prompt you for a password to get past the encryption software and then you would have to use your windows login to get into the PC. Now-a-days you are taken to the Windows login directly. So how does the encryption software know that you have not hacked your way around Windows. Can all the files still be read? Is the encryption key somehow tied into your windows login password and if deviated at all the files are unreadable?

Any info would help....Thanks
