Hello Illusia, and welcome to our forums

The Alcra B virus (winupdates) is not to difficult to remove but you will need hijackthis to fix it.

Please download hijackthis directly from by clicking on the blue word "here" and save it on your desktop.

To extract HijackThis:

1. Right-click your file HijackThis.zip and from the menu select "Extract All".
2. The Extraction Wizard Window will appear, Click "Next".
3. Click Browse and navigate to "C:\" or the "C:\Program Files" and click "Create A New Folder" and call it "HJT" or "HijackThis" or whatever that is easy to remember and then click OK.
4. Click the Extract button.
5. Close the HijackThis.zip dialogue box.

Now double-click on hijackthis.exe and when the window opens, Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as a reply to this post.

Still Stuck

Postby Illusia » Mon Feb 05, 2007 12:20 pm

Hi Gecko,
Thanks for your help.
This is the second time I've tried to reply - my browser keeps shutting down.
I downloaded the zip file to my desktop, selected "extract files" because there was no "extract all" option. I extracted them to my desktop because I was unable to create a new folder in Programme Files - it wouldn't give me the option.
As soon as I double click on the hijackthis folder, the screen goes blank for a bit, then comes back with my desktop and browser only.
It seems I am unable to run the software because of this virus.
Any other way around this.
Once again, thank you so much for the help! I'm about to start tearing out my hair!
Vicky

Illusia,

Let's try renaming hijackthis.exe:
Right click on hijackthis.exe and select "Rename" now type hjt.exe and press enter.

You should now be able to run your newly renamed hjt.exe.
Press the Scan now and save a logfile button and then when it is done, copy and paste the contents of the notepad it opens as a reply to this post.

Heya Gecko,
I've been trying to follow your instructions all day. Unfortunately, I am unable to keep hijack this open long enough for it to do a scan, let alone scroll down checking all the boxes before getting to the fix button. Is there any other way around this or something else I can do to stop the virus from thwarting me at every turn?

Also, I'm assuming that everything hijackthis comes up with is something you want me to "fix"? I just don't have the time to read the list while I'm checking boxes before it all shuts down.

I'll keep trying but I honestly don't think it'll work.

Hello again,

I just had 50 browser windows open up before my computer froze.
On restarting, I found more than five "svchosts.exe" in the task manager. As I was deleting them, I received a message to say my system was closing down. As it counted down from 50 I received Nortons pop-ups telling me something was wrong. Then it all shut down.

Sorry to bother you with this problem of mine, but for something everyone says is easy to fix, I'm having a really bad time with it.

What can I do if I can't use hijackthis to "fix" anything?

Illusia,

I'm sorry that you are having such a hard time with your system.
Lets try a different approach and see if we can get your system clean.

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat Please save it on your desktop.

Quote:
@echo off
sc stop svchosts
sc delete svchosts
exit

Do not click on the FixServices.bat until you have rebooted into safe mode.

Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Once in safe mode double click FixServices.bat. A window will open and close, this is normal.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
svchosts.exe

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:
Logitech Desktop Messenger

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhwtbviuja\winlogon.exe

If you cannot delete these file(s)then:
Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now click Delete a file on reboot
Select the file to be deleted on reboot:

Click open but click no to reboot now do the same for each of the files:

Last Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

Restart you computer into normal mode and post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.

(you will get an error on startup about svchosts.exe and winlogon.exe we will take care of this next reply)

Hiya,

I've not ben able to get on line until now thanks to this virus.
I'm afraid I've not been able to follow your instructions. Even in safe mode, whilst closing down the svchost.exe's in the tast managers I get a pop up message saying that the system shut down is initiated by NT Authority\System because the Remote Proceedure Call service termiated unexpectedly.

Is there any other way?

Illusia,

Lets try a completely different approach this time to see if we can delete these two files.

Please copy (Ctrl+C) and paste (Ctrl+V) the following text in the quote to Notepad. Save it as "All Files" and name it FixServices.bat Please save it on your desktop.

Quote:
@echo off
sc stop svchosts
sc delete svchosts
exit

Now click on the FixServices.bat, a window will open and close real fast this is normal.

Please download to your desktop.
Click killbox.exe, now select the option "Delete on reboot".
Now click on the "All files" button

Next copy the below red part:

C:\WINDOWS\system32\svchosts.exe
C:\WINDOWS\system32\qhwtbviuja\winlogon.exe

Click 'File' in the killbox Menu on top and choose Paste from clipboard
Now click the red X icon to delete these files on reboot
Killbox will tell you that all listed files will be removed on next reboot and asks if you would like to Reboot now, click YES

If you don't get that message, reboot manually.

Once your system has rebooted post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.

Still stuck!

Postby Illusia » Tue Feb 13, 2007 1:31 pm

Heya,

I have tried both versions of FixServices, and both times I'm pretty sure I saw the word "failed" in the black box that pops up for a split second.

So I wasn't able to run KillBox in normal mode. I ran it in safe mode. I typed both of the files in the window and I got a pop up box as the computer was about to restart saying "pending file rename operations registry data has been removed by external process".

I assume that this means when I tried to delete svchosts.exe using My Computer, it worked. There was another file in there I couldn't delete called svchost.exe.

I have also deleted Logitec Desktop Messenger using both the Add/Delete window and My Computer.

I tried once to use Hijack this fix the aforementioned files while in safe mode, but now that I've rebooted into normal mode, it's all there again.

The only differences are - my homepage keeps changing, I got a popup as computer was slowly slowly opening windows to say "this application cannot be completed because the other application is busy. Choose "switch to" to activate the busy application and correct the problem" which I ignored till it went away, and my google search bar is gone.

I'm still not able to get into regedit, still can't run HijackThis properly, or open KillBox while in normal mode.

I did manage to get a log after rebooting into normal mode, and it looks the same as last time. So far I'm unable to post it for you because I cannot keep notepad open long enough to copy and paste it. I will keep trying, but I've been working on this for three hours.

Is there someplace I can get someone to remote access my laptop? Someone that knows a bit more about computers than me? Haha.

Illusia,

svchosts.exe is Gone ! good job, things should be easier now.

I see that you have AVG Anti spyware installed I think you can use it to clean most of what's left.

Boot into safe mode and then start AVG Anti Spyware
First select the "Settings" tab, once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine".

Now Under "Reports"
* Select "Automatically generate report after every scan"
* Un-Select "Only if threats were found"

Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan".

AVG Anti-Spyware will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.

Once the scan is complete do the following:
If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions"

Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.

Select the "Save report as" button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).

Close AVG Anti-Spyware and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the AVG Anti-Spyware report scan in your reply along with a new hijachtjis log.

Still infected

Postby Illusia » Fri Feb 16, 2007 1:43 pm

Hiya,

Thanks for taking the time to look over those logs.

Every time I restart my computer, a new svchosts.exe is installed. There is another file called svchost.exe as well. When I go online, something sucks up the bandwidth.

Anyway, I followed your latest instructions (still having issues opening anything useful - including log file unless I rename it) , and here is the log:
