What is your schedule..?

Was just thinking about making a schedual to try and keep this darn PC healthy...

I was thinking I would run Ad aware, spybot search & destroy, and an online quick virus scan once a week

A full virus scan once a month, and possibly running a Ghost once a month... Just in case...

Now the questions:

1: What else would you suggest doing? And how often?

2: What are some good on-line virus scanning software?

The reasons for only running an online virus scan is because having Virus software on the comp slows down the system too much for her trading software to be effective.... So once a month I install, scan, and un-install Virus software....

I know this isn't the safest, but with what she does, seconds count. So far, it seems to be working out...

I run Spybot and Ad-Aware a couple of times a week at least but I'm sure I don't need to... I usually just find tracking cookies etc... nothing bad.

This is not because I don't run an antivirus of my own...it's because I think 2 heads are better than one. I increasingly find that adware/spyware/virus scanners miss finding something but their counterpart finds it straightaway... safety in numbers

I have McAfee and I tend to leave that to scan things as they come into my computer and online scan with Housecall just to make sure.

What antivirus have you got Junior? If it slows your PC it may be worth changing it. I know it kills you to do it when you've spent good money on it... I did the same with Norton... but you're not getting your money's worth if you are leaving it uninstalled most of the time.

Norton used to nearly bring my old computer to a standstill when it auto-updated... and I stood by and let it... because I had paid out for the Norton.. it was a bore though, it crippled me. Now I have on my old computer and it's made a world of difference. The computer still performs well and is protected 24/7.

you might want to check and see whats loading on boot. A lot of programs defaut to load on startup. Your system slowing down because of Norton Virus scan sounds like the tip of the iceberg. If you installed Norton System Works, and Ghost, that could be your problem. I have removed anything that says Norton or Symantic from my system except for Norton Virus scan--that company builds resource hogs. Winfax, MS Office, Nero, Realplayer Jukebox etc (ad nauseum), all try to load on startup and its not necessary. Your virus program should stay.

Yea, I know we should have something that scans real time... I was thinking about giving the AVG a try..

As for the Norton products, I don't have any on the sys right now... and all I had on while 'me better half' was complaining was the AV software...

Her trading software takes up A LOT of resources so I'm sure it is the primary contributing factor, but that software is essential to her livly-hood.... Still looking for the compromise between safety and speed.

As for checking to see what is loading on boot, I was actually going to post the Q here, on just how to do that... Also how to make it so things Don't load on boot..

I think I'll start a new post for that..
