Postby modernsamurai » Thu Apr 13, 2006 1:04 am

my comp's been acting severely odd, such as windows explorer crashing and generally moving alot slower than it should. out of precaution, i did a hijackthis scan and here's the log.

Your log is clean :)

Try eliminating some of the 50+ programs that you have running from startup and see if that helps.
Start > Run > type msconfig and press enter > Startup tab

Lets see if we can isolate the error:
Go to Start > Control panel > Administrative tools > Event viewer > look in the application and system sections.
You are looking for any red or yellow icons, double click on the icon.
Click inside the 'Description' section then highlight the text and copy and paste it into notepad.
At the bottom of the event window check 'words' and then copy and paste that text also
Then past it all of it into this thread.

If you don't show any errors in the event viewer then:
Go to Start > Control Panel > System > Advanced tab > Startup and Recovery section
Settings button > System Failure section > check the box 'Write an event to the system log'
When the error ocures again follow the above instructions about posting the error codes.

Get rid of the Yahoo and AOL tool bars, both are resource hogs. Also remove the bitcomet tool bar, that use to be spyware. Use the Google tool bar (on the install select minimal install not full, it won't phone home).

You might also want to run CCleaner here is a link

Then if you are running XP go to the c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything. This is where windows figures out what to load on startup, from your startup history. Don't worry, it gets rebuilt. I clean it out monthly.

Also, if its XP with service pack two, there is a new option in Tools called Manage Add ons. This allows you to disable items that may be messing up Internet explorer. Disable them all and see if the problem goes away. If so, enable 1/2 of them and see what happens. If it conks out, then disable that half and enable the other half, they should then be good. Then from there select half of the bad section and enable it and try again. You should be able to find the culprit in about 8 tries.

Good luck

Windows saved user SOCRATES\Owner registry while an application or service was still using the registry during log off. The memory used by the user's registry has not been freed. The registry will be unloaded when it is no longer in use.

This is often caused by services running as a user account, try configuring the services to run in either the LocalService or NetworkService account.

For more information, see Help and Support Center at http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp.

ok, there's a hella lot of these red app errors, and it would take way too long to post them all, but that's a few things under applications...

After looking over you error log I think you might have a memory problem.
Please download

Extract your chosen media download and create your bootable media, put media in and reboot.
Let memtest86 run for at least an hour to get true results if you get any errors then you have a bad stick of ram.

You can download and convert the .img file into a .iso file.

IsoBuster can read and recover data from over 20 disk image file types.
It's a nice little program well worth the download.

Gecko's Isobuster will work, but it defeates the img files setup. you're going at it backasswards.

Go to this site and use this program. When you click on your .img file, it will install a complete boot disk image to the floppy.

Its a very nice program for storing images of boot disks that you need now and then.
