XP and Bizarre Altnet straggler..

Postby CanadianTek » Thu Jan 13, 2005 9:31 pm

Happy New Year Gang !!

Over at my buddy Peter's..

At my urging.. several months ago.. His children finally decided to do the Kazaa or Kazaa Lite.. uninstall..

All went well.. or so they thought..

the uninstall via add/remove programs seemed to have worked..

except.. one straggler, - Altnet.. which is used to deliver/manage the point manager.. or the peer to peer manager.. or something like that.. has decided to stick around..

I updated them from Spybot v1.3 to spybot 1.3.1 TX.. just incase that was the issue..

Ran it.. and dooomph..

+ Altnet appears..

i open the plus..

it says.. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Altnet

I say.. remove it.. spybot says.. nope.. but let me try next time on reboot..

let it try.. nope.. still cant remove it.

So, went out.. and tried to remove it using regedit..

when you click on it .. on the left hand side.. the altnet folder appears to be empty on the righthand side of the screen..

and regedit wont let me rename, or delete it.. nor delete from above, hoping it would take it out.. :S .. no go.. (i figured if i could rename it.. it would then change its "status" and become deleteable.. but no such luck)

went out.. got the big guns.. Reg Mechanic..
ran it.. - found 4 straggling.. kazaa entries.. and 6  yes SIX .. altnets..

of course i jumped alllllllll over that and said..

FIX these problems..- delete those puppies..

it toook them out..

went back to Spybot v1.3.1.tx.. bzzzt.. still there..

i dont think it made a difference in safe mode, i will try it once again..

...have not upgraded system to SP2.. as there was a problem / bios conflict
....but i dont think sp2 would offer up any fix for this either.. and i dont want to attempt upgrading it.. until.. this has been resolved

I ran HJT v 1.99 and here is the report..

I found this

"Right click the registry key of the offending key (Altnet) then
select "Permissions". In the "Advance Tab", select your User Account name
then check the box to replace owner. Click OK. Next, in the "Security"
tab, select your User Account name then select the box for full control.
Click OK. Try deleting the offending keys now and it should be gone."

Hope this helps :)

Also, make sure you back up your registry before you make any changes.

Tried it as administrator in regular mode,

Would not grant me full rights..

was able to take out one of the subkeys..

but it still would not let me take out the altnet itself..

says.. could not grant permissions/change owners for one of the keys or subkeys

tried to inherit the rights/permissions from above.. still no luck..

Will log in as ADMIN in safe mode give it one more try
