Picked up "Smart Defragmenter" somehow... It's been a pain. I've gone through the steps listed here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/virus-r ... fragmenter

But everytime my computer is restarted it shows back up. See if ya can help. I'd appreciate it. Thanks in advance.

I just removed this exact infection on a neighbor's system over the weekend, combofix is the tool I used.

Please download to your desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

If combofix will not start or is ended before the "Blue window" please rename combofix.exe to cbf.exe and try again.

If cbf.exe will not start or is ended, you will have to run cbf.exe from safe mode.
Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Do not exit Combofix while it is running you my loose all your personal settings!
Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running, that may cause it to stall.

When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

This is the best that I could ever get from DBF. It seems to run and then just does nothing most of the time. If the computer sits while I leave and come back then sometimes it continues the process....

It's also said something about not being able to create files. If you want more detailed info on that, let me know and I'll rerun the process untill I get that message again...

(At the same time, my system doesn't seem to run the Smart Defragmenter although the "shortcut" is still on the desk top.

It looks like you are running both Combofix and HJT from a non administrative account.
Please make sure that you are logged in as an administrator before running Combofix.

First let's try right click on Combofix from the Drop Down Menu select the Run As Administrator option.

If that doesn't get you past that point in Combofix then I'll post how to "Activate the real Aministration account on reboot.

Tried that, didn't do any good. Other times that has worked, but it doesn't seem to matter for Combofix...

I'm going to have you disable the UAC so you can get combofix to run and then enable the UAC once we are done.

First you will need to download these two reg files



This can only be done while logged on to an administrator account.
Now right click on the Elevate_Administrator_Priviledge.reg file you downloaded and click on Merge.
Click on the Run button in the Security Warning pop-up.
Click on Continue (UAC), Yes, and then OK when prompted.
Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply the changes.

You should now be able to run combofix without it stopping.

To restore the UAC right click on Restore_Default_Settings.reg file you download and click on Merge.
Log off and log on, or restart the computer to apply the changes.

This time after running the Eleveated...

It completed stage 48... (This was done while I was sleeping) When I got up there were to windows both stating that PEV had stopped working...

I tried to copy and paste the scan log, but it doesn't seem to want to paste...

I haven't run the second program that sets things back to original settings, so let me know what you'd like me to do next....

Don't run the Restore_Default_Settings.reg until we get this fixed then we'll put thing back to normal.

I'm sorry you're having trouble getting combofix to finish on your system.
Let's get back to basics and see if we can get ride of what's left.

Please uninstall the old Hijackthis by using Add/Remove programs in your control panel.
Please do this before installing the new version.

Next please download and install the latest version from the following link:



Now run a new scan with the new HJT and post the log back here.

Please copy this to Notepad and save it to your desktop or print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any other open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Start HijackThis and click "Do a system scan only" put a check next to each of the following entries:

Now click the "Fixed checked" button and then close HijackThis

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Folder:
C:\Users\Jason\AppData\Local\Temp\

If you cannot delete these folder then:
Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now click Delete a file on reboot
Select the following files to be deleted on reboot:
C:\Users\Jason\AppData\Local\Temp\4682260.exe
C:\Users\Jason\AppData\Local\Temp\176764.exe

Click open but click no to reboot now do the same for each of the following files:

Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

Restart you computer and post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.

Junior_co,

Well nothing bad in that log a couple of missing file entries. Let's try a different tool

Download to your desktop.
Double click on the icon to run it. Make sure all other windows are closed to let it run uninterrupted.
When the window appears, underneath Output at the top change it to Minimal Output.
Under the Standard Registry box change it to All.
Check the boxes beside LOP Check and Purity Check.
Click the Run Scan button. Do not change any settings unless otherwise told to do so. The scan wont take long.

When the scan completes, it will open two notepad windows. OTL.Txt and Extras.Txt. These are saved in the same location as OTL.
Please copy (Edit->Select All, Edit->Copy) the contents of these files, one at a time, and post it with your next reply.
