Internet wont work

Postby KenA » Sat Jan 03, 2009 5:35 pm

I posted this on ina nother section but i think it belongs here...apologies Mods !!

Howdy. Im trying to sort out my dads PC for him at the moment. His internet has stopped working.

it used to drop the internet connection fairly regularly and show the "limited or no connectivity" symbol. A system restore would sort this out.

Now, that symbol is not present but no internet. It wont do a system restore either.Im suspecting an infection.

Ive found a few strange things happening as well:

The Windows firewall is set to "on" and is greyed out completely (wont let me turn it off).

I cant access the router settings (192.168.1.1) either.

Ive done a virus scan ( although definitions a week old) but nothing showed up. SO no matter what AV i run i cant update it first. Ive also run malware bytes (without it being updated) but only found warnings.

Im stumped and feel like wiping the whole thing and doing a fresh install of Windows.

Heres my log:

KenA,

I see somethings that are part of an infection so lets run Combofix.

Please download to your desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

Do not exit Combofix while it is running you my loose all your personal settings!
Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running, that may cause it to stall.

When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Hi gecko...While scanning, Combofix warned me that McAfee was active but i had un-installed it yesterday and there was no trace of to my knowledge.

EDIT:
I forgot to mention that last night i did the ipconfig again and it wouldnt give me any info at all. It kept returning "Windows IP Configuration" and nothing else.

Heres the combofix log anyhow:

KenA,

Let's run AVG in safe mode even though you can't update it should get the remains;

Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Start AVG you will get their command line scanner, just use the defaults and scann your system.
After it finishes, Click Start, click My computer and then right click on your C: drive and select "Properties"
Now click the "Disk cleanup" button, in the next window put a check next to Recycle Bin, Temporary Internet Files and Temporary Files click OK and then click yes in the popup window.

Restart you computer and post a new HiJackThis log when you reply.
