Popups - 'remove your spyware' related

Postby VincentVV » Wed Mar 26, 2008 10:32 pm

Hi

Having some problems with the family computer, namely unwanted popups of the kind offering to 'fix spyware' and 'your computer is infected'. Also noticed some slowdown.

Possibly something might have been accidentally installed by another user, or maybe we have just picked up some spy/malware.

Any help much appreciated as usual.

VincentVV,

Please download

1. Double click on SmitfraudFix.exe.
2. Press 1 then hit the Enter key.
3. It will create a report named rapport.txt, usually at C drive.
4. Please post back this log in your next reply.

Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool";
it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes.
Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore they may alert the user.

SmitFraudFix installed and run as per instructions, log below.

NOTE: The popups are now quite frequent, informing us that 'Spyware-Secure' should be installed to cure computer slowness and spy/adware. A different popup - also from 'Spyware-Secure' asks 'do you want to stop the spyware'.

VincentVV,

It looks like this is the problem file:
C:\documents and settings\user\local settings\application data\eabxneab.exe
But I suspect that there is more to it than just that one file.

Please download to your desktop.

Double click combofix.exe and follow the prompts.

It wiil take quite some time to finish it's scan and then it will reboot your system.

When it's done running it will produce a log for you. Please post that log in your next reply.

Important Note - Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running, that may cause it to stall.

Done.

EDIT: When the computer starts up now, the Windows 'System Configuration' box pops up advising that there have been some changes. Then another box with the 'Boot.INI' option [I forget exactly what this box is, its to do with system startup sequence?], then after clicking on 'OK', a third box asking if we want to 'reboot now' or 'later' for the changes to take effect.

I hope this is a clear enough description of what is happening - it is not my own computer that has the problem so I am going back and forth between another machine/location.

Are these Windows 'system configuration' boxes popping up as a result of running ComboFix, and should we be doing anything with them, and will this stop once the cleaning process is finished?

VincentVV,

It does not look like you draged then droped the CFScript file onto ComboFix.exe like this:
Image
You need to do this to make sure something is not being reinstalled.

I suspect that Norton is catching the changes as well as windows it's self.
That is whay you would be seeing the System Configuration boxes.

BTW there are conflicting reports about Uniblue RegistryBooster.
Some indirect downloads are infected with malware and try to install it every time Uniblue RegistryBooster runs.

Please post a new combofix log after doing the drag and drop.

Hi Gecko

No, I did indeed drag the Notepad CFScript into ComboFix icon on my desktop. XP then asked me if I wanted to 'Run This Software?' [Yes], and ComboFix then performed like you said. I thought maybe something had gone wrong with the drag-and-drop, but the CFScript had disppeared 'into' ComboFix.exe.

I have gone through the procedure again today, and absolutely ensured that CFScript has been dragged-and-dropped into ComboFix.exe.

The Notebook [file type: all files] CFScript read exactly as follows:-

File::
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvs2.dat
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvs2.bak
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvs2.bak2
C:\WINDOWS\system32\nvs2.inf2
c:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\arzgbwy.dat2
c:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\arzgbwy.inf
c:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\arzgbwy.inf2
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\arzgbwy_nav.dat2
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\arzgbwy_nav.inf
C:\Documents and Settings\User\Local Settings\Application Data\arzgbwy_nav.inf2
Folder::
Registry::

Again I was asked to 'Run This Software?' [Yes], and ComboFix performed again.

If it helps I did briefly move ComboFix from the Desktop inside a new folder I created specially for this issue [to keep the new programs away from casual users when I was not there], but only after I ran it for the very first time from Desktop [without script] and it was put back on the Desktop ready for receiving the CFScript.

Also, ComboFix did not ask to reboot after running.

Usual computer user reports that the 'Spyware Advert' popups have not ocurred today - however I'm not sure if that means they have been eliminated, and would of course desire to see the whole removal process through to the end.

VincentVV,

That's better, I can see now the CFScript.txt did run and the listed file were deleted if there were there.

Your Hijackthis log is now clean.

However if they are still getting popups and/or the System Configuration boxes on every boot up.

Then I suggest that you download extract it to your root like this:
C:\rkr\RootkitRevealer.exe

Close all other programs, windows and disable your screen saver before you start RootkitRevealer.
While RootkitRevealer is running, you shouldn't do anything at all with the PC.
Put down the mouse, back away slowly, and let the program do its work.

Start RootkitRevealer.exe and press the Scan button.
It will take some time to finish an hour is common so just wait it out.
Once the scanning is finished RootkitRevealer will create a log, please copy the contents of that log into your reply.

Hi Gecko

The spyware popups are now apparently gone.

However the System Configuration boxes still appear on startup:-

'You have used the System Config utility to make changes to the way Windows starts. The SCU is currently in DIAGNOSTIC or SELECTIVE STARTUP mode, causing this message. Choose NORMAL STARTUP on General tab to start Windows NORMALLY and UNDO CHANGES you made using the Sys Config Util. [There is a box to check for 'dont show msg or launch SCU when Windows starts]'

We are just working around this at the moment, since I am not sure if changing to NORMAL STARTUP might undo any of the work by ComboFix in removing the spyware/popups?

Therefore I have run RootKitRevealer as instructed, with following log.

With the spyware/popups apparently gone, please let me know best way to stop the System Config boxes popping up also.

VincentVV,

Please download AproposFix from and save it to your desktop but do not run it yet.

Reboot into Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Now doubleclick on aproposfix.exe and unzip it to your desktop. Open the aproposfix folder on your desktop and doubleclick RunThis.bat and follow the prompts.

When the tool is finished, please reboot back into normal mode and post a new HijackThis log, along with the entire contents of the log.txt file in the aproposfix folder.

Is there still a problem?

No more spyware popups - are we able to get rid of the System Configuration box on startup now?

Thanks again.
