Help needed - attacked by iehomepages.com

Postby VincentVV » Thu Oct 26, 2006 11:06 pm

Hi there.

I believe it was Gecko helped me in removing the Trust Cleaner problem I had several months ago (much appreciated!).

Now I have similar issues with a friend's new computer - and I hope you can help me solve them.

The computer's homepage has been set to www.google.com in Internet Options, yet on clicking Internet Explorer I am faced with www.iehomepages.com. There is lots on this page about SpyWare removal etc. etc.

To give you a background on what has happened so far, the computer is only a week old but my friend (who is a novice user and has little understanding of Spy/Malware threats) reports that it has become very slow and he cannot remove this bogus home page. He has also unwittingly clicked on the various adverts claiming to 'remove spyware from his computer' (and in doing so has of course installed several malicious programs). He has also installed and used LimeWire. He has a trial version of Norton Anti Virus running, which has popped up several times with virus warnings (not sure if these have been rectified as of yet). Also, a ballon pops up from the bottom right set of icons warning that 'dangerous Malware is attacking the computer - click here to fix' (I have only exited the balloon, not clicked on it since I assume the program it is coming from is bogus).

In my attempts to sort it all out for him, I have installed and run SpyBot Search and Destroy, with several results. I have allowed this program to fix some plainly obvious Spy/Malware, though decided to leave some entries alone for the time being since they were prefixed with 'Microsoft..' and I did not want to remove anything that could be important (before doing anything I made a backup of the registry too). I have also removed LimeWire from the computer.

The www.iehomepages.com remains.

I only have limited access to my friend's computer, but I can with several visits follow your instructions to help remove these threats he has instantly fallen victim to.

Look forward to your assistance.

Thank you in advance

Please copy this to Notepad and print it. Make sure to work through the fixes in the exact order it is mentioned below. If there's anything that you don't understand, ask your question(s) before proceeding with the fixes.
You should not have any open windows when you are following the procedures below.

Reboot in to Safe mode:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

Press Ctrl/Alt/Del and "End Task" or "End Process" on each of the following:
(They may or may not be there)
AdwareAlert.exe

Turn off system restore by right clicking on My Computer and go to Properties->System Restore and check the box for Turn off System Restore. Click Apply and then OK. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

O2 - BHO: (no name) - {7b4d79df-9ef0-429d-a0e9-d9b138c6a53b} - C:\Program Files\PowerCodec\isaddon.dll
O3 - Toolbar: Protection Bar - {8aed5df3-6e0b-4930-b1a5-f8aa8d757497} - C:\Program Files\PowerCodec\iesplugin.dll
O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [adwarealert] C:\Program Files\adwarealert\AdwareAlert.exe -boot
O21 - SSODL: gaonic - {f31aee4a-1530-4fef-8537-79c6973bff9a} - C:\WINDOWS\system32\tazth.dll

Uninstall the following via the Add/Remove Panel (Start->(Settings)->Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs) if they exist:
PowerCodec
AdwareAlert

Go to My Computer->Tools/View->Folder Options->View tab and make sure that 'Show hidden files and folders' is enabled. Also make sure that Display the contents of System Folders' is checked. Remember to reset these when done.
Delete the following Files/Folders if they exist:

C:\Program Files\PowerCodec\isaddon.dll
C:\Program Files\PowerCodec\iesplugin.dll
C:\Program Files\PowerCodec\ (delete the folder)
C:\Program Files\adwarealert\ (delete the folder)
C:\WINDOWS\system32\tazth.dll

If you cannot delete these file(s)then:
Start HijackThis and click the Open the misc tools section now click Delete a file on reboot
Select the file to be deleted on reboot:

Click open but click no to reboot now do the same for each of the files:

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders, Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your Recycle Bin, reboot and post a new HiJackThis log.

Thank you for your reply.

I followed all the instructions, as follows:-

I turned off System Restore

No AdwareAlert.exe task was present to be ended upon CTRL, ALT, Delete

HiJackThis duly fixed those four entries

I uninstalled AdwareAlert and PowerCodec in Add/Remove programs

I deleted those files/folders, but had to use HiJackThis to 'delete on reboot' the file in the system32 folder

I emptied the temporary files and recycle bin

I reverted back to System Restore on and hidden files/folders and rebooted.

Upon rebooting, the homepage was correct at Google, and everything seemed fine. I copied the new HiJackThis log ready for posting to you, but upon trying to enter my own Hotmail account to send it to myself for forwarding onto you later from my own computer at home, my internet connection ceased.

After several reboots, and checking of the modem connections (apparently OK), still I am unable to gain access to the Internet on my friend's computer. This has set alarm bells ringing in his house that I may have done something catastrophic to his machine during my fixing process.

I don't for a moment think this is possible, but after considering that their internet connection is usually fine and that my connection with the same ISP next door is working AOK, I am beginning to wonder if this is just coincidence.

So you have full understanding of what changes I have made to his computer today and eliminate any possibilities that I have somehow caused this lack of connection, I must point the following out:-

I needed to download HiJackThis again after I'd already entered Safe Mode (assume no internet access in Safe Mode?), so rebooted again in normal mode. After getting HiJackThis I was then distracted and neglected to follow through your fixing process in Safe Mode - completing all the tasks in normal mode.

Also, I found that when tapping F8 to enter The Windows Advanced Options Menu, I was faced with several other options first which I was unfamiliar with. I wasn't working under the best circumstances with other people in the room at the time, so I could not digest or fully understand the options I was faced with. After pressing Return twice, the screen filled with lines and I remember System32 being prominent in these entries. They went off screen, and finally The Windows Advanced Options Menu came up so I could proceed with selecting Safe Mode.

Finally, when I was at the stage of trying to remove PowerCodec through Add/Remove Progs, a message came up stating I must reboot in order to uninstall the program. Suspicious, I cancelled the operation since rebooting at this time would be no good. So after completing the other stages of the removal instructions, I went back to Add/Remove Programs for another go - this time, PowerCodec4.0 was removed successfully with no such box popping up again. Note, PowerCodec '4.0' was removed, which I trust was correct.

Note: I just deleted the AdawareAlert and PowerCodec folders.

Sorry for my inexperience in these matters, I realised afterwards that I really should have followed all instructions to the very letter - it's just very difficult working with another (even more novice) person's computer as you might appreciate.

Anyway, the IEHOMEPAGES has gone, as has the bubble eminating from the bottom right of the desktop advising to 'click here for Malware removal' (what was causing these has obviously been fixed).

But do you know why he is now unable to connect to the internet? It is not just certain websites, nothing connects at all after we've waited for everything to boot up time and time again.

Before I suggest they contact their ISP and even look to a replacement modem from the company, I would very much appreciate your input on this matter and let me know if I may have gone wrong somewhere along the line to cause this. Remember we did get a connection right after booting when everything was fixed, but only briefly for a few websites until I went into my Hotmail account - then nothing.

Apologies again for my noobness - I wait for your reply in anticipation.

PS

Until he is unable to connect back to the internet, I cannot post the new HiJackThis log from his computer or email it to mine - though I should be able to save it to disk, load it into mine and forward it to you.

EDIT:-

Also, there was an AOL toolbar installed which I removed upon the request of my friend. Several other AOL elements seem to exist in this new computer (the ISP is Telewest BlueYonder) - could removing this toolbar have made any difference? I'm sure I was able to negotiate the internet briefly after removing it... BlueYonder Support Tool also seems to conflict with Norton over computer security, so I thought it best to disable that for now too (makes no difference, internet still not working).

First of all anything I had you do or that you did should have had no affect on his internet connection.

He did have a trojan (C:\WINDOWS\system32\tazth.dll)
Sometimes removing a trojan can expose other items that were hidden from Hijackthis by the trojan.
With the trojan file now missing it is possible the other malware could be the cause of the connection loss.
That is why a new hijackthis log is so important right after a fix!

There is a chance he can get on line while in safe mode if it is a malware problem.

Reboot into Safe mode with Networking:
Restart Windows after you see the BIOS screen and before Windows starts to load.
Start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears.
Use the Arrow key to ensure that the Safe Mode with Networking option is selected. Press Enter.
See if it will connect, if it does connect then it is defiantly a malware infection.
Post a new Hijackthis log here and I'll sort it out.

If it still won't connect then do the following:

Click Start > Run and type cmd in the text box.
You are now in a command box at a prompt, type the command below and then press enter.
ping 209.73.186.238 (note the space between ping and 209)

This is Yahoo's ip address not the resolved name address.
If the returned reply is "Request timed out." then it could be a hard ware or a malware problem.

If the returned reply is Reply from 209.73.186.238: bytes=32 time=41ms TTL=xx
Then it's a dns issue and very well could be malware related.

Repeat the above command box instructions in normal mode the results might be different.

I think it is malware related because you did have connection until you went to Hotmail.
But I cannot rule out hardware failure at this point it does happen.

Either way I really need to see a hijackthis log to know what is going on.

Hi

I was told the internet was connecting again earlier today, but I followed your instructions:-

Turned off System Restore

Rebooted in Safe Mode with Networking

Internet connected no problem - I visited both my Hotmail accounts to transfer the HiJackThis log

Ran HiJackThis and saved log

Restarted in Normal Mode

Turned on System Restore

Now, all was fine again in Normal Mode, until I visited Hotmail again. Then - 'page not found'.... no internet connection!

Restarted again in Safe Mode - internet connection no problem

Restarted again in Normal Mode - internet connection no problem, visited several sites, ran out of time to check if visiting Hotmail would cause failure once again.

HiJackThis log:-

Note - I noticed an icon for SPYWARE PROTECTION FROM AOL, as well as various other AOL elements - just in case they might be causing some problems. Also, BlueYonder support tool is starting up with computer - should I disable this and leave Norton alone to protect the machine, to avoid any conflicts? (until they get a better virus checker of course)?

Thank you!

Hi VincentVV,
I'm glad to hear that internet has returned, the Hotmail issue might be malware.

Please download extract the contents to your Desktop.

Open the SmitfraudFix folder and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter"; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Warning : running option #2 on a non infected computer will remove your Desktop background.
