Win ME - has/had My Search but freezes all but desktop icons

Postby CanadianTek » Tue Aug 17, 2004 4:40 pm

This is an oddity..

I ran bazooka and it said i had My Search spy installed.. walked thru the instructions.. took out what i could find..

Had a defective RAM CHIP ( was 256Meg @ 133) - kept giving me the blue screen of death while installing AVG.. at other points .. it would freeze me outta the task bar and start menu, yet icons on the desk top would work?? SO i ran a power on - load from CD - RAM test utility.. and nothing.. after several DOZENS... if not just shy of 100.. full diag loops.. with dozens of bit patterns.. - it passed ..yet as soon as i booted into Win ME - freeze out.. or blue screen of death..

so switched it over to 128 Meg of 100Mhz ram... was successful on AVG.. CLEAN.. ran Spybot and Ad-aware.. cleaned up all that it found.. and mysteriously.. no freezing.. no lockout on the task bar buttons or the start menu..

but.. not sure where else to go with this.. as i know its not 100% yet..
so here is the hjt log..

(it is 2 days old, but i have kept it offf the net.. and tested to see if it was a processor over heating.. or locking or if it was ram.. and so far.. in safe mode.. - no problems.. after 2 days of being on) - so i dont think it is processor or heat related..

just..noticed..

Postby CanadianTek » Tue Aug 17, 2004 6:48 pm

Havent done any exhaustive analysis.. not sure..

if this is important or not..

but to the best of my knowledge, comprehension and understanding.. i personally have not touched this computer as far as cleaning or further updates go..

however.. one difference between the HJT report from v 1.98

and the newer .. v 1.98.2

is this line

O21 - SSODL: AUHook - {BCBCD383-3E06-11D3-91A9-00C04F68105C} - C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\AUHOOK.DLL

??? was it a flaw being reported the first time? or an unnecessary line of code.. not being reported the second time.. or a flaw in 1.98.2 that is now missing this command.. ? i dont even know what this particular registry entry is about..

let me know..
