Help - Internet Explorer Hijacked by Trojan

Postby Edgecrusher » Sun Aug 01, 2004 6:01 pm

Hi All,

I am hoping someone here will be able to help me with what appears to be a trojan problem I'm having with my computer/Windows XP. I have DSL service which connects through a router and had been running fine until the past couple weeks. The problem I'm having is that after I boot up my computer, my internet explorer works fine for about the first 7 to 10 minutes connected, then will no longer find/connect to any websites. It appears as though I'm not connected, however, I'm still able to use my yahoo messenger/aol im services.

I have downloaded Norton and did the live update. On my first full system scan a couple weeks ago, Norton told me it detected "Trojan.Startpage". It supposedly quarantined the file at the time, but I initially did this without System Restore being turned off, etc. Since then, I've done some reading and tried to follow instructions for methods to remove the trojan (i.e. have system restore turned off, etc.). However, now Norton doesn't detect that trojan anymore.

Since then I've downloaded trojan hunter and got the following message:

Registry scan
No suspicious entries found
Inifile scan
No suspicious entries found
Port scan
No suspicious open ports found
Memory scan
No trojans found in memory
File scan
Error: Directory not found: A:\
Warning: Unable to unpack UPX-packed file C:\Program Files\Trojan Remover\unp.exe (Add to ignore list)
Found possible trojan file: C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\unimt.exe (Suspicious: UPX-packed file in Windows System folder) (What's a possible trojan file?) (Submit for analysis...) (Add to ignore list)
Error: Directory not found: D:\
Error: Directory not found: E:\

I've also downloaded Hijack This and here is the logfile:

Brad,

I updated Ad-Aware and downloaded/updated SpyBot. The problem is continuing to occur. I did notice that each time I've rebooted and run Spybot, the same DSO registry changes have occurred involving internet explorer. I tried to fix them using SpyBot, but they continue to reappear as registry changes each time.

Here is a copy of the Hijack This log file:

I'll try and help. Please, post the entire Log File next time.

**(Always create a Folder for HiJackThis anywhere but your Temp/Temporary Internet Folders. This is where it will save the backup files needed if there's a problem.)**

Turn off System Restore. (Turn it back on after this is repaired and you've rebooted.)
(This would also include the “GoBack” Program if it is installed.)
Close all other open Windows and have HiJackThis Fix:

Go to Control Panel / Add/Remove Programs and remove the following if they are there:

MyWebSearch
weatherbug

Now delete these Folders or Files that are Highlighted: (You may need enable "Show all Files" and disable "Hide System Files" in Windows Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View Tab) (You may have to boot to "Safe Mode" in order to delete some Files/Folders)

C:\Program Files\MyWebSearch
C:\Program Files\Weatherbug

Now, empty all your TEMP Folders (WinXp has up to 4 of them) / Temporary Internet Files Folder and then empty your "Recycle Bin" and reboot.

Brad,

I followed the directions as specified in your previous reply (system restore already off, Hijack This fixed the files you listed, checked add/remove programs but neither were listed/tried in safe mode also, and emptied temp folders/recycle bin), but I am still experiencing the same problem with internet explorer. I’ve scanned/fixed using SpyBot and am still seeing the following DSO issue listed each time I reboot my computer:

DSO Exploit: Data source object exploit (Registry change, nothing done)

I also have a current copy of the log file from Hijack This. I didn’t realize the entire log file wasn’t showing. I’m using the “Save Log” option and figured this shows the entire log file. Here is the most current Log File:

#1 - (Courtesy of the techguys.com) "The DSO Exploit is a microsoft workaround. If you have IE 5.0 with SP3(service pack 3) or IE6 with SP1 installed, the DSO doesn't work then, but still shows up in Spybot. You don't have to worry about it then. If you don't want it to show up you can do one of these two fixes:

One: (While running SpyBot)
Back up, back up, back up. Make sure you know what you are deleting and back it up.

(1) highlight one of the "Data source object exploit" items,
(2) Right click the highlighted item to bring up the menu list and select "More details",
(3) Now click "Jump to location",
(4) You are now viewing the Registry and can use the path shown in the Search & Destroy window to get to the key shown,
(5) Then manually delete each of 5 keys and it will no longer come back

Two:
The safe method which i should of put at the top.

Open Spybot and select 'advanced' mode.
Select 'settings' in the left column.
Select 'ignore product' in the left column.
Select 'security' tab.
Place check mark in box beside DSO Exploit.
Close program
Open Spybot and run a scan."

#2 - Are you using Mozilla? Are you using Prodigy?

Brad,

I just tried the safe method (#2) and now after SpyBot scans it shows that there are no immediate threats. I just downloaded Mozilla and tried it out, however, the same thing keeps happening (can't find connection after about 8 minutes). It's so frustrating as the internet runs perfectly for those first 8 minutes, then nothing.

Here's the most current HiJack This log file:

What in your opinion should we try next? Have you ever encountered anyone with a similar issue to this before? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!
