browser problem

Hi,I am having a problem browsing certain websites.I have the same problem using IE6.0 or Opera 7.0 These are the sites I can't access:
www.pricewatch.com and www.riffinteractive.com I used to be able to get to these sites until recently.I don't remember changing anything. These sites are online because I can get to them from my laptop,but not my PC.
If I type in the ip No. I can access them,but that's it.I can't click on any links once I'm there to access any other webpages at the site. How do I update my hosts list on my PC. I think that is what I need to do.

thanks for the suggestions,but nothing worked.i even deleted the host file.this is the error mssg i get:Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer guess i'll just live with it. thanks again for the quick responses. danag

This is a cross post from another help forum that I made to someone who was having connectivity problems:

But in this case, another feature of ExtraDNS might come into play. Rather than the one primary DNS server and 1 backup server that the ISPs use to resolve the host, ExtraDNS polls up to 10 DNS servers simultaneously. Whichever one resolves the host first is the one ExtraDNS uses. The ISPs default is to poll the primary DNS server until it resolves the host, but if it cannot resolve the host the ISP polls the secondary server only after the primary times out. So if the connectivity issue is a DNS server problem (caused by a flood junk requests brought on by a Denial of Service attack) you would stand a better chance of finding a working DNS server using ExtraDNS.

ExtraDNS costs ~$20 (~$30 actually )as I recall but there is a 30 day trial.<<

This sounds just like a url hijack.
I would try downloading and running
I don’t know if Opera can be hijacked but it’s worth a try.

Problem is solved.I searched and found another hosts file and deleted it.Now I can access the troublesome websites.Thank you all for your time and suggestions.Dave

As you found out -- and as anyone who is following this thread should know -- the HOSTS file that "counts" is the one with NO file extension.
